The State of Minds test comprises 15 questions which have been carefully designed and rigorously piloted in consultation with experts from the Psychology and Sociology departments at Queen’s University, Belfast.

The three main objectives of the test are:

  • To assess people's attitudes towards those from the other main religious group;
  • To gain a measure for each person of their overall level of tolerance; and
  • To put that measure of tolerance within the context of Northern Ireland as a whole.

In order to provide a reliable body of data which could act as a benchmark for our participants’ scores, the BBC commissioned an independent market research company to randomly sample 1,200 adults within Northern Ireland from a range of socio-economic backgrounds.

The responses given by the participants in the programme - both in studio and at home - will be compared to this sample of 1,200. This enables each individual to see how their toelrance score compares to the population as a whole.
