Here are some of the main headlines from day one so far...

• Britain's Toby Samuel beat Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic to claim his first main draw win at a Grand Slam.
• Katie Boulter also won, beating American wildcard Carol Young Suh Lee 6-4 3-6 6-0.
• Cameron Norrie, however, is out after losing to Luca Van Assche of France.
• American third seed Jessica Pegula opened proceedings on Arthur Ashe Stadium with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
• Italy's Jasmine Paolini, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and 2021 runner-up Leylah Fernandez are also safely through to the second round.
• However, 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova is out after falling to a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 defeat by Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova.
• Daniil Medvedev avoided a second successive first-round exit in New York with a commanding 6-4 6-2 6-4 win over Frenchman Hugo Gaston.

More from Great Britain's Toby Samuel, on the support he got out on the court: “There’s quite a few so I’ve got my university coach Josh Goffi, he came out here to watch today. Team Bath – all of the coaches there and then I’ve got some friends from uni come out and obviously my parents and family were out here for the quails. A lot of people I couldn’t have done this without.”

On his next opponent Jiri Lehecka: “He’s a great player, it’s going to be a really tough battle, and I want to try and beat him and I have to bring that same focus and intensity I did today if I want to have a good shot at winning.”

On how relaxed he has become: “Playing enough of these matches you start to become more used to it. The first time I was playing in front of a big crowd so I was nervous, I was cramping in the second set, and it was really tough but obviously now I feel a bit calmer. There’s still a bit of nerves there because it’s such a big event and I’m still pretty new to it but I’m definitely feeling like I belong here more.”

On being starstruck as he was at Roland Garros by the likes of Alex Zverev: “I’m still a little bit but I’m definitely more comfortable being around those top guys and not quite as starstruck because I could be playing them the next day so I have to sort of thinking of them as not stars but also people I can play against.

“But it’s really cool to be a part of this environment and it’s amazing to see I learn from those guys and see what they do off the court and how they prepare for matches.”

Great Britain's Toby Samuel, spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live after his first round victory against Tomas Machac: “I was so happy with how I played today. I really focused on trying to come out fast because in the qualifiers I lost the first set in every match so this time we focused on really coming out quick and I sort of hardly missed a ball in the first two sets and I was surprised with my own level – like ‘oh this is amazing and hopefully I can carry this on’, and I managed to get the job done and I was very happy with how I played.”

On his first Grand Slam win: “It means everything to me. It’s what I dreamt of as a skid watching these big tournaments and slams being able to win my first Grand Slam match is unbelievable.”

On potentially becoming a top 100 player: “That is another reason why we all play - to make the top 100, being top of the game and playing all the slams so hopefully at the Australian Open I can get main draw from this. I’m so thankful for everyone who’s helped me get to this stage. There are so many people who have put a lot of effort and support into me and I’m so grateful.”

I think that was a really tough match for her coming in. Just because of her history of not enjoying playing the lower-ranked players as much and I think she handled it so well.

I think Carol played such a good match from start to finish and they were just at each other's throats the entire match. Even though Katie won that last one six games to love, you always felt Carol was just there nibbling away at her ankles.

When she won that last point, after they shook hands, it looked like a sigh of relief that she got through it and the job was done.

Katie Boulter was on the backfoot there, but Carol Young Suh Lee can't get her racquet up fast enough to defend the passing shot.

Match point.

Katie Boulter tried to come in for the inside-out forehand on Carol Young Suh's serve, but she can't move her feet quick enough and she skews the return wide.

She has better luck on the next serve though. Deuce.

Carol Young Suh Lee sends a serve out wide and blasts the return to the other side of the court, leaving Katie Boulter with no chance of getting there.

But the British number one is going nowhere. 30-30.

Boulter is looking like she's injected the ball with more pace and she's just looking more confident and focused. Very locked in.

Lee's still fighting very hard and making her play the extra ball but Katie seems calm and collected now.

But the British number one finds her rhythm again and slams a winner past the American to move one game away from a place in the second round.

This time she gets it! A blistering cross-court winner and it's four games on the bounce for Katie Boulter.

"Let's go Katie" shouts a fan. The world number 62 has another break point after her opponent finds the net.

That's good anticipation there from Carol Young Suh Lee as she races to the corner of the court before Katie Boulter pins a forehand there.

But the American wildcard can't finish the job off and we go to a fifth deuce.

Nope. She puts Carol Young Suh Lee on the backfoot with a decent return down the line, but then she slices a backhand into the net. Deuce.

Here we go. Another break point for Katie Boulter. Can she get this one over the line?
