Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton led the way in practice at the British Grand Prix before sprint qualifying later on Friday.

The seven-time champion was 0.213 seconds quicker than championship leader Kimi Antonelli, with the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc also heading the Italian's Mercedes team-mate George Russell, winner in Austria last weekend.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri was fifth fastest, but 0.887secs off the pace, despite a spin at Becketts midway through the session.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was sixth fastest, 0.980secs behind Hamilton and clearly struggling for grip, ahead of the second McLaren of Lando Norris and Red Bull's Isack Hadjar.

  2. Back for sprint qualifying build-up at 16:00 BSTpublished at 13:44 BST

Are the stars aligning for a famous Lewis Hamilton victory at the British Grand Prix? Possibly. But that was only first (and only) practice, so we'll pump the excitement brakes just for now.

The compeitive action is full throttle now, with sprint qualifying, which sets the grid for tomorrow's shorter race, up next. Go and take a break and then come back and join us for build-up at 16:00 BST.

British rookie Arvid Lindblad was on the Racing Bulls radio late in the session to something didn't sound "super-nice on the rear" of the car, adding maybe the engine needs a once over. Sprint qualifying gets under way at 16:30 BST, so there is time for his crew to take a look before SQ1 goes green.

This is a surprising order, after what Lewis Hamilton said yesterday. Everyone was expecting Mercedes to be further away from Ferrari here. It's only practice but I don't think anyone would have expected Hamilton to be leading by two tenths of a second from a Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton played down Ferrari's chances for British Grand Prix glory but the nine-time Silverstone winner has certainly surprised the crowds with that lap on the soft tyre. Could he get a 10th victory here? Maybe the 17-lap sprint race will give us a hint tomorrow.

  11. Hamilton beats Antonelli's timepublished at 13:26 BST

Charles Leclerc goes third on the board but that now turns to fourth as Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton jumps above leader Kimi Antonelli by two tenths. The seven-time world champion's time is 1:29.260 on the softs.

Max Verstappen completes his soft run and slips between the two McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, more than nine tenths off Hamilton's marker.

George Russell, I don't think he's been on the podium here before. More than that, he just wants to get his head down. He really needs to continue the momentum from last weekend. He has got to get a grip on this 40-point gap. Kimi Antonelli seems to be the type of driver where nothing fazes him.

George Russell is next to cross the line and while he beats Australian Oscar Piastri's soft-tyre marker, he's no match for Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who flies to the top of the timesheets with a 1:29.473, nearly half a second quicker than Russell.

  14. Piastri goes quickest on softspublished at 13:20 BST

Oscar Piastri shoots straight to the top of the charts on the C3 soft tyre with a 1:30.147.

Liam Lawson wants to know what Audi's Nico Hulkenberg is playing at, as the Racing Bulls driver was gearing up for a push lap and feels the German ruined his preparations. Lawson has recovered from that tussle with Hulkenberg and has gone third on the board on the medium compound.

It's time for some soft tyres to be bolted on now with 10 minutes remaining of this sole practice session.

How will the back of the field perform this weekend? Aston Martin are based right on the doorstep at Silverstone and would love to collect some points on home soil. However, Fernando Alonso said the iconic Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel section of the track could be like "a charging station" under the new regulations, so we'll see what the two-time world champion has to say when he gets out of the car after first practice.

Over at Cadillac, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez were out of the race in Austria with only a handful of laps on the board. Will the American team, who have got celebrations going on for the fourth of July, suffer with reliability issues again this weekend?

Mexican Perez is actually 15th on the timesheets at the moment, so a positive start on his side of the garage.

  18. Spin for Piastripublished at 13:09 BST

Oscar Piastri, who had an eventful Silverstone last year with that 10-second time penalty, has just had quite a big spin in his McLaren around Chapel. The Australian is asked if he is OK by his engineer. He is, but he adds that his tyres are now dead.

Over at Alpine, Pierre Gasly informs his pit wall the car is feeling unpredictable before heading into sprint qualifying later this afternoon.

  19. Hamilton to the toppublished at 13:05 BST

Barcelona produced the first all-British podium - Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Lando Norris - in 50-odd years last month, so can they be repeated at Silverstone this weekend?

The first two places so far on the timehseets are occupied by an Italian, Kimi Antonelli, and a Frenchman, Isack Hadjar, with Russell currently third, two tenths off title leader Antonelli's quckest time.

Charles Leclerc has moved himself up the order following his latest lap on the hard compound but his Ferrari team-mate Hamilton has beaten Antonelli by 0.256 seconds to lead this first practice session with a 1:30.521 on the hard rubber.

The harvesting is embarrassing. There is no other word for it. It is making the challenge of Copse, Maggots and Becketts into a farce. It needs to change.

A street circuit in London would be good but this is the best track on the F1 calendar by far. Its only challenger is Interlagos.
