England resumed today on 223-2, with Jacob Bethell on 74 and Joe Root on 21.

Things soon went wrong for the home side, losing both set batters and Jamie Smith for just 11 runs inside six overs - you can see their wickets below.

They ultimately lost their last eight wickets for 130 runs.

As far as I'm concerned just let them get on with it. Ben Stokes is the best captain we've had for years, although he could be better disciplined. Bazball is the most exciting cricket. All our criticism is not going to help.

    Michael, Portsmouth

When we lost at The Oval it was passed off because we had five changes. Well New Zealand have had three changes, then a concussion sub and their best ever player retired mid series. And they are hammering us, so what’s our excuse now?

Game and series over for England. A fairly low ebb. Time for some Ben Stokes reflective thinking.

Ravindra brings up half-century off 81 balls

Rachin Ravindra made 76 in the second innings at The Oval and he's making another strong contribution in the latter dig at Trent Bridge.

He's unbeaten overnight on 60 from 90 balls.

  5. Close - NZ 120-3published at 35 overs

Last over of the day - one single from it as Daryl Mitchell runs the ball down to fine leg.

England hurry round to try and squeeze in another over, but the umpire's aren't having it.

New Zealand's day - starting with bowling out England for 354 to secure an 84-run first innings lead.

They wobbled for a time and were 51-3, but Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten 69-run partnership has taken the tourists towards a total they can defend.

    Woops.

Shoaib Bashir bowls a huge looping full toss, dropping down on Rachin Ravindra at shoulder height.

Ravindra gets his bat underneath it and adds four runs to the no ball - that takes New Zealand's lead past 200.

  7. NZ 110-3published at 33 overs

    Ah, one-ball experiment.

Jamie Smith drops back and Jofra Archer sends down the rest of his over - no runs off the bat, but a front foot no ball denies the seamer a maiden.

  8. How's stat?!published at 18:21 BST 27 June

    CricViz analyst

Rachin Ravindra had a forgettable home series against England in 2024, scoring 129 runs at an average of 21.5 across six innings without a fifty-plus score. He started off this series with a couple of low scores again, but with two fifties in his last three innings, he now has 177 runs at an average of 35

  9. NZ 109-3published at 32.4 overs

    Crikey, alright.

Jamie Smith, whose wicketkeeping has been the subject of criticism in our inbox today, comes up to the stumps mid-way through Jofra Archer's over.

Not sure he'd be the seamer I'd pick to try this out, but England are maybe trying a few things

The next delivery strikes Daryl Mitchell on the gloves, and we have a bit of a break as the physio comes on.

Matt in Farnham at 18:03. What would you replace Bazball with? They have played more like a proper Test team this match. Suggest someone to take over that isn’t going to take us backwards, please.

    Ian, Penarth

Is this England side worse than the nadir in 1999 against New Zealand?

    Jonathan, Cambridge

I'm afraid if its a series defeat surely it has to be the end of Brendon McCullum and Rob Key. It would be eight Tests and six defeats.

  11. NZ 109-3published at 32 overs

All a bit frantic off the last two balls of the over.

Shoaib Bashir collects a return shot from Daryl Mitchell and throws wildly at the stumps.

The ball passes Jamie Smith and Harry Brook dives from slip to stop it running away for four byes.

Mitchell then tries to sweep and gloves the ball - it loops up and comes down just in front of Jofra Archer at short fine leg.

Speaking of Archer, he's going to replace Ben Stokes for a burst before the close.

Shoaib Bashir is bowling just a touch slower than he did in the first innings, while generating more turn this time around.

Shoaib Bashir average speeds and turn in this match:

    • First innings - 57mph, 2.4° average turn
    • Third innings - 56mph, 3.2° average turn

Four more, Daryl Mitchell this time.

He edges Ben Stokes and the ball flies past the slips.

    Frustrating for the England skipper.

New Zealand did need that good partnership between Mitchell and Ravindra.

  15. 50 runs

    NZ 102-3; lead by 186

First four off the bat in a while, and it brings up Rachin Ravindra's half century!

He whips Ben Stokes through square, bringing up the landmark off 81 deliveries.

That also takes New Zealand's score into three figures, and brings up the fifty partnership off 97 balls.

  16. NZ 98-3published at 30 overs

Daryl Mitchell attempts to sweep Shoaib Bashir and is struck on the pad.

The England spinner offers half an appeal, but that's well outside the line.

The groundsman at Trent Bridge has prepared an excellent track for this Test Match. It's only now on day three it has begun to misbehave but still predictable enough for the batsmen to play their shots. A beautifully poised match, with all potential results still possible.

    Karl, Canterbury

Rachin Ravindra looks pretty set, and once that happens it’s hard to get him out.

    Tim, Cambridge

Time to end the 'Bazball' era! It's been another series of controversy and under performance.
