Dame Meera Syal: Aunties, rebellion and becoming a British icon

You might know Dame Meera Syal from Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars or her many roles on stage and screen. But behind her decades-long career is a story about a self-confessed “feral tomboy” who grew up loving stories, but also feeling a sense of judgement from the aunties around her.

Meera joins Amber Haque to talk about breaking away from those expectations and how she’s now come to understand the women she once resented. She also reflects on representation, owning South Asian stories and the importance of finding your tribe.
