Police are still searching for a second suspect after three people were killed and four injured in a shooting at the Seattle Centre, in the north-western US.

Gunshots rang out at 18:01 local time on Sunday as thousands of families were enjoying an annual food festival.

Witnesses described running for cover, with some taking shelter inside Seattle's landmark Space Needle.

One suspect was detained at the scene, while a second fled from officers and a search is ongoing to find them, according to the assistant chief of Seattle Police, Tyrone Davis.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Davis said the two suspects are believed to have been shooting at each other.

Four people, including a two-year-old boy, remain in hospital in a stable condition.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson described the incident as an "unbelievable tragedy and a horrific act of violence", as she said more needs to be done to tackle gun violence in Seattle and the US.

More now from that update from assistant chief of Seattle Police, Tyrone Davis.

Davis says he is not able to discuss further details about the suspect who is in custody but it is a "young person". As a reminder, police are also looking for a second person believed to be involved.

Pressed on whether those who were injured were "innocent bystanders", he responds that we don't know their involvement at this time.

He says those injured include a two-year-old and all victims are in a stable condition.

"This is a tragedy and I'm really sorry this happened," he says.

Tyrone Davis says this is an ongoing investigation and officers are going to be at the scene for several hours.

He tells the media that right now police believe there is "no outstanding threat to the community."

A suspect is being interviewed and police are still searching for a second suspect, Davis adds.

"There were two people who we believe were shooting at each other," he says.

Tyrone Davis says gunshots were heard at 18:01 local time, with officers already in the area immediately responding to the incident.

Officers addressed one of the shooters, Davis says, who "gave up and was taken into custody".

Another suspect who police believe was involved in the incident fled the scene and officers launched a search to find them, Davis adds.

He says there are a total of seven victims that suffered gunshot wounds and officers helped to perform CPR on several victims at the scene.

Before Tyrone Davis spoke to the media, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson described the shooting as an "unbelievable tragedy and a horrific act of violence".

Wilson said there was "far too much gun violence in this city and in this country."

The latest shooting follows a week in Seattle where there has been "three major incidents of gun violence in just a few days", she said.

Assistant chief of Seattle Police, Tyrone Davis, says there have been three fatalities in the shooting.

Two victims were unable to survive their injuries and died at the scene, he says, while a third victim who was taken to Harborview Medical Center has since died from their injuries.

Thousands of visitors were enjoying the last day of Bite of Seattle food festival at the Seattle Centre at the time of the shooting.

Videos show crowds jumping over fences when the gunshots rang out and taking cover in the Space Needle's lobby.

The Pacific Science Center, which is at the south end of the Seattle Centre, will be closed on Monday.

In a post on Instagram, it said all shows and general admissions for the day will be cancelled, with guests automatically refunded.

We reported earlier that members of the public took shelter inside Seattle's landmark Space Needle, one of the most recognisable structures in the world, rising 605ft (184 metres) above the city.

Videos showed people crouched on the ground, taking cover behind pillars and shelves of merchandise in the lobby during the shooting.

The tower's roof was recently transformed into a giant football to celebrate Seattle hosting several matches during the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

Seattle mayor Katie Wilson has updated her earlier statement and now says one suspect is in custody following the shooting.

"I want to thank the Seattle police officers who responded to the scene and took a suspect into custody," she says in her updated statement.

Initially Wilson said two suspects had been taken into custody.

No other details on the suspect have emerged.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has offered his condolences to the families of the victims.

"My prayers are with the families of the victims, and the responders as they work to keep people safe," he said on social media.

He said he is receiving briefings on the ongoing police response and urged the public to avoid the Seattle Center and follow directions from law enforcement.

Two suspects have been taken into custody following the shooting at the Seattle Center, according to Seattle mayor Katie Wilson.

"I want to thank the Seattle police officers who responded to the scene and took two suspects into custody," she said in a statement. No further details were provided on the identities of the suspects.

Wilson also condemned the shooting as an "act of horrific violence".

"Tonight, our attention belongs to the people whose lives were taken, those fighting to recover, and the families beside them," she added.

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal who represents Seattle has condemned the "senseless violence" following the shooting at the Seattle Center.

"Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this senseless violence," she wrote on social media.

"We are in close touch with Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and Governor Bob Ferguson, and co-ordinating across multiple levels of government to get updates on the situation."

Jayapal urged the public to continue to stay away from area as the active investigation continues.

The Seattle Fire Department has released more information on those injured after confirming two people were killed in the shooting.

Among those treated at the scene:

• A 56-year-old woman in a serious condition. Paramedics took her to hospital
• A 2-year-old boy in a stable condition. Paramedics took him to hospital
• A 40-year-old woman with minor injuries who declined transport to hospital
• A 39-year-old woman in a stable condition. Paramedics took her to hospital

• A 23-year-old man in a stable condition. Paramedics took him to hospital

Seattle Police Department is still investigating and has not released any information on possible suspects.

Two people have been killed and at least five others have been injured in the shooting at the Seattle Center, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

The two people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Among the injured is a two-year-old boy who was taken to hospital in a stable condition, and a 56-year-old woman in a serious condition.

Another victim had minor injuries and chose not to go to hospital. The fire department did not provide further details on the nature of the injuries.

The hospital treating some of the shooting victims, Harborview Medical Center, has held a news conference saying the hospital is in "partial lockdown".

A spokesperson for the hospital says the measure is based on communication with the Seattle Police Department and is for the protection of the families and victims.

There are currently four people being treated at the hospital, including a child who is in "satisfactory" condition.

The others injured include two women and one man, all in satisfactory condition, but one woman is in surgery.

The spokesperson says the hospital is not expecting further patients from the incident.

They seem to be inspecting areas where food stalls are abandoned.

We're getting more information from local media on the scene, with one Seattle Times reporter describing several loud pops and then what sounded like rapid gunfire.

A local vendor at the Bite of Seattle told the Seattle Times he heard multiple gunshots "all at once" and saw panicked parents grabbing their children and rushing towards the exit.

He added that children were crying and the scene was mayhem.

Images on social media show a huge police and emergency services presence at the scene, with multiple police vehicles and officers in tactical gear.

Videos also show crowds jumping over fences when the gunshots rang out and taking cover in the Space Needle's lobby.
