Episode 260617 / 17 Jun 2026

We are here to answer your questions about English language, culture and life. I'm Buli, and I'm with Becca, who is here to help me answer this week's question. Hi Becca.

Becca
Hey Buli. Nice shirt! I love that green colour.

Buli
Thanks, Becca! I bought it on sale at the weekend. It was a buy one, get one free deal. So, I got a blue one too.

Becca
Oh, what a bargain! I also did a bit of shopping at the weekend.

Buli
Hmm, some retail therapy perhaps?

Becca
Yes. I spent all day wandering around the high street and a market.

Buli
Ah, sounds like you've bought a whole new wardrobe! Speaking of shopping,

Question

Buli

Becca
There are so many sales on at the moment. I think it's because we've changed seasons. Lots of shops are trying to sell last season's stuff.

Buli
Yes, and lots of shops are trying to price match on similar items.

Becca
They are. A lot of market prices and high street prices are the same these days. But I went shopping on the weekend and there was a '3 for 2' sale on long flowy skirts at the market. So, I bought a black one, a white one and a red one. Then I went to a clothes shop on the high street, and they were selling the exact same skirts, 3 for £15! That's a fiver less than I paid at the market.

Buli
Ah, Becca. Well sometimes it's good to look around when you're shopping to get the best discounts.

Becca
Yeah, and it's good to look out for price locks too, especially when you're shopping around the supermarket.

Buli
Good tip! I could save money if I plan ahead and keep an eye on those price locks.

So, Becca, we talked about discounts in shops. For example, I bought my shirt on a 'buy one get one free' sale.

Becca

Buy one, get one free. This is the same as saying two for the price of one. You might also see signs that say '3 for 2'. This means that you can take three items but only pay for two. Most shops will count the cheapest item as your third item, but not always.

Buli

比如,刚才 Becca 就提到 “the high street shop was selling skirts at 3 for £15(那家高街店正用 3 件 15 英镑的价格卖裙子)”。

Becca

Yes. Usually, if the first number is higher, then it means 'buy more with a smaller price', and if the first number is lower, it means 'buy how many with a specific price'. Though, three skirts for £15 was better than '3 for 2'. I paid a fiver, £5, more for the skirts at the market.

Buli

Becca
Yes. Anyways, it was not the price match that I was expecting.

Buli
Indeed. A 'price match' is when a shop matches their price to another shop, usually somewhere cheaper. That's why you were disappointed, because the market didn’t price match with the high street, and you spent £5 more.

Becca
Exactly. And lastly, a 'price match' is different to a 'price lock'. A 'price lock' is a guarantee that the cost of something will remain the same for a period of time. This ensures that the price won't rise – at least for a while.

Buli
Yes. We often see price locks when looking for travel prices or in supermarkets.

Becca

Definitely a good idea to look out for those discounts!
