One of UK's most scenic railway lines turns 150 years old

If one thing makes the Settle to Carlisle line special, it's the view from the window. This railway line goes through some of the most stunning countryside in Britain.

要说塞特尔-卡莱尔铁路线有什么特别之处，那非窗外的美景莫属。这条铁路线穿过了英国一些最迷人的乡村腹地。

Back in the 1980s, there was a proposal to close the line, but thousands of people and one dog objected. There's now a statue of Ruswarp the Border Collie, who signed the petition with his paw.

The route was saved.

The most famous landmark along the line is the Ribblehead Viaduct. Finished in 1874, it stands as a remote testimony to hard manual labour.

"It's over 100ft tall. That's how tall it is. And without it, of course, the line wouldn't be complete. So back there in the 80s, when this was in trouble, this viaduct was in trouble, you can see why repairing it would have been an expensive hobby, and so the idea of closing the line was mooted."

"My dad was a driver on the line, and we used to come on holiday to Dentdale in our caravan, and as my dad [was] working, he'd go past, we'd stand in the fields with our tea towels, giving him a wave, and he'd toot his horn. But also because I met my husband, who works on the line, he's a conductor for Northern, so we had our very own love story on the line, and we got married in September, so it's got lots of precious memories."

There's even volunteer guides on some trains to give a bit of background.

Several stations along the line are in very remote locations, which means they are quite away from the places they serve.

Special trains are often seen on the route too.

This is a sought-after path for the handful of steam engines which can still be used on the main line.

And that gives a look to these remote uplands that could easily be from more than a century ago.
