There are over 400 village halls in the county. That's a lot of committee members, a lot of committee meetings - and a lot of problems to solve!

But we might be able to help!

FACTS

Devon has over 400 village halls. Some are old, some are new; all are run by voluntary committees.

Village halls offer a local centre for activities. Fewer people have to travel to enjoy recreational or learning opportunities. They also promote community activity and local decision taking.

The Community Council of Devon’s Village Halls Service offers advice and support to the voluntary committees running Devon’s 400-plus village halls and community centres.

The BBC Devon Website has teamed up with the Community Council of Devon to try and make life a bit simpler.

Its success however, will depend on you. Below is a message board. It's a place to ask for help, to offer help and to share ideas - after all - two heads are better than one; a problem shared is a problem halved… and, well, you get the idea.

Committee meeting
Sharing ideas can be just as effective on the web

Although meeting face to face is always preferable, it costs money and time and is not a practical answer. The message board will be the next best thing.

The message board below is a space where - in theory - all the committees from all of Devon's village halls can meet 24 hours a day!

Realistically though, it will be a space to share and overcome some of the ups and downs of village life.

Village life in the sun

Village Hall problems can be solved, information shared - and perhaps most importantly - successes can be celebrated!

It will be a place to ask the rest of Devon if they can help, and similarly a place where you can offer your help to others.

If you're unsure where to turn next with funding for your roof repairs, or would like to vary the choice of courses you offer, or would just like to know what others are up to, then the message board could provide the answers.

If you like the idea then why not post a message in the comments section and see what the rest of Devon has got to say!

The page will be monitored by the BBC website team with advice from the Community Council of Devon.

Does anyone have any info. on the proposed changes to the licensing laws with regard to village halls.

Tim Hornar
Clinton Hall , Merton. This site could become very useful if enough halls log on regularily. We are happy yo help and share our ideas.

Richard Broome, Ogwell Memorial Hall
Do other Hall Committees share our concerns at the increasingly stringent conditions imposed under the terms of their Public Entertainment Licences? Are the risks of personal liability becoming too onerous for unpaid part-time volunteers?

Len Rhodes. Parkham
The Trustee's of the Village Hall would like to know if they can download a hire agreement form. for the people they hire the hall to. Many thanks. Secretary.

I think something that would benefit village and town halls would be an easily accessible list of them on the internet. I'm trying to find a fairly low cost reception venue for my wedding and it is practically impossible to remind myself of where they all are. After all renting them out counts as an investment in them surely!

THIS WEB SIGHT IS WELL OVER DUE, IAM SURE IT WILL HEPL MANY COMMITTEES TO SHARE INFORMATION ON GRANTS ETC. HERE IN MOREBATH WE ARE TRYING TO REBUILD OUR VILLAGE HALL WE ARE HOPING TO START LATER THIS YEAR- IF WE CAN RAISE THE REVENUE. THE WHOLE COMMUNITY IS PULLING TOGETHER TO ENSURE IT HAPPENS. BUT WE MUST GET FUNDING FROM THE CCD AND OUR DISTRICT COUNCIL. WE ARE DESPIRATE FOR A NEW HALL , IF WE DONT GET WHAT WE WANT OUR VILLAGE WILL BE SWALLOED UP AND LOOSE ITS IDENTITY LIKE A LOT OF OTHER SMALL RURAL VILLAGES. WE ARE ABOUT 300 PEOPLE IN OUR PARISH.

Is your village on or near the River Dart, and do you have a community noticeboard in your village? If so, I'd like to send you a poster about an exciting new project Devon Wildlife Trust is working on. The project focuses on the Dart, and is directly relevant to your community.
