Morchard Bishop is a village not far from Crediton. The residents of a small estate in the village - The Greenaway - were having a few difficulties with the Parish Council - and wanted to sort the problems out.
Stephanie writes... I started to get involved in the project because there were several issues in our street about antisocial behaviour. Things like household items being left outside or children scratching cars when they were playing football - things that you would usually find on a council estate. | | Taking a break in the back garden |
Quite a few of us were called to a meeting with the parish council to discuss what could be done about the antisocial behaviour. That was quite a good meeting because it was becoming such a problem that there was local newspaper interest and we felt that our road was becoming an antisocial hotspot. It wasn't like that at all, but some of the older people were becoming worried about it. Gareth writes... So we formed a community group to discuss what the problems were and what the solutions could be. We came up with the idea of a woodland allotment, so that the adults can be out there growing our own food, there's some space for the younger kids to be, and hopefully we can create some space for the teenagers. Hopefully by doing this project we're going to empower ourselves to create our own employment and our own futures. | | The project begins in the back garden |
A few of the families are what I'd call disadvantaged families - because a few of us are single parent families and come from unemployment through mental health. I didn't feel having come from council estates most of my life I didn't feel that the problems here were unusual - just people with needs really. This article first published September 2003
