CHINESE ART

Artists in China use a small red stamp to sign their paintings.

They then use a second and even third red stamp to indicate their philosophy of painting.

School children in China are taught the philosophy of what they're doing at the same time as they're taught the techniques of painting.

The visual arts carry as much weight as subjects like Science and Maths in Chinese schools.

Pupils have to work hard at painting techniques and are asked to repeat their work until they get it right.

Plymouth school children will be learning to look at life from a different angle this month. Local artists will be joined by teachers from China to explore how Chinese children are taught to paint.

After the workshops it's hoped the Devon children who take part can stay in touch with the school in China, using the internet.

"From Another Place" is an exhibition of work by 5-11 year olds from the Sui Ning Primary School.

They are taught how to see, at the same time as they're taught the techniques of painting.

Kate Sparshatt has been involved in bringing the exhibition and workshops to Plymouth, and she says the children's skills are absolutely fantastic.

"The way they use space is more interesting than putting a strip of blue sky at the top and a bit of green grass at the bottom," explains Kate.

"The children look at things from a different point of view, in a holistic way. They develop an understanding of what painting is.

"For instance if they want to paint people looking up at a bird, they may paint the heads upside down in the sky."

Zoe Coles works as a ceramicist and sculptor. She had the idea to bring the paintings to Devon, and set up the project with locally based artist Xiao Bai Li.

"We want to create an exchange of ideas between Chinese and Plymouth pupils, using the internet. Then after the workshops here, the children can keep in touch and see each other's art work," says Zoe.

"Chinese children are being influenced by Western art because of the opening up of China.

Ten years ago they used lots of white background with a bird or tree. Now green grass and blue sky are creeping in.

"We want to see how ongoing contact between Chinese and Devon pupils will see both sets of children picking up ideas from each other."

The exhibition will be used as inspiration for workshops being held for Plymouth teachers and primary school pupils.

There are also drop-in workshops for members of the public.

A selection of paintings by children from the workshops will go on display with the exhibition when it moves to the Museum in October.
