The Chinese New Year
Dragon

For the first time in the south west, it's the younger generation that are organising the Chinese New Year Celebrations.
And that means there is a much greater emphasis on involving the wider community.

FACTS

The colour Red is used as it is symbolically auspicious, and the decoration, usually of good wishes, is typically in gold, denoting wealth and fortune.

Most Chinese migrants to the UK came from the New Territories of Hong Kong, and this accounts for the fact that the major dialect spoken amongst Chinese people here is Cantonese.

New Year is supposed to give you the opportunity for a fresh start, a chance to become a better person

The giving of money is a symbol for recipients of the red packets to achieve greater fortune and wealth in the coming year.

Mr Tom Wong - the President of the Devon and Cornwall Chinese Cultural Association - has organised the previous festivals.

Now retired, he is convinced that the future of the Chinese association rests with the younger generation.

He said "The young people getting involved is very important for the Chinese community.

"Because they grow up in this country - they are educated in this country and they know more about the English history and culture"

Eiling Wong has co-ordinated much of this years celebrations.

She is convinced that the young people in the community should be involved, but recognises that the they can learn a lot from their elders.

She said "They have a lot of experience of the Chinese tradition and the culture but we [the young people] have a more western approach to things.

"We believe that we should open the event to the wider community. Although it is a Chinese celebration we would like to share it with the other comities as well.

"In fact there are more non-Chinese at this years event than ever before."

Mr Wong added "We want every body to understand the Chinese in this country - especially in Devon and Cornwall. Of course people know about new year, but they don't really understand what the Chinese association is doing"
