Victim Support Derbyshire - £13,067.77 Charity that, through volunteers, provides confidential support to victims of crime, their families and friends. The services provided are free, independent of the police and available to everyone. Volunteers also offer support and practical information to those people giving evidence at court by showing witnesses the courtroom beforehand, explaining procedures and going with them to court. The Money Mountain grant will mean the charity can install computer software that will improve and develop the services on offer and enable volunteers to support more victims and witnesses. You can help raise money for this year’s Money Mountain appeal by buying one of our special piggy banks. They come in a very fetching pink colour and are ideal for collecting all that small change to give to the appeal. Heage Windmill Society - £5,000 Heage Windmill is the only working windmill in Derbyshire. It’s open to the public who can get a better understanding of milling and our heritage. Their grant will be used to install two new sails on the mill that have been found to be rotten and were not part of major restoration work that the Society carried out during 2001/2. They also want to fit purpose-built guttering to limit water getting into the structure of the building. The installation of the 2 new sails will see Heage Windmill returned to its full complement of six sails and will mean that it will be one of only three working windmills in the UK with six sails. Kenstud Pony Rescue - £5,000 Cares for unwanted, neglected and distressed horses and ponies and educates young people and adults in animal welfare. This is accomplished by taking students on work experience from Derbyshire schools in the Amber Valley area and adults who want to learn more about caring for animals. They want to use their Money Mountain grant to buy a horse trailer that they can use for moving sick animals to the equine vet hospital and will help them transport equipment as well as hay and straw for the animals. Mayfield & Ellastone Community First Responder Group - £4,000 Unpaid volunteers, trained and authorised by Staffordshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, that maintain a round-the-clock 365 days a year mobile emergency medical service. They want to buy a ‘Thumper’. More properly called a Lucas Device, this is an amazing piece of medical equipment that performs perfect CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) - a life- saving procedure in which first responders are trained extensively. The Thumper provides exactly the pressure and rhythm appropriate for the patient whether they’re a 16 stone man or 8 stone woman. It’s easy to operate and can be deployed very quickly. Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation - £3,000 Provides a voluntary underground search and rescue service covering the Peak District, Derbyshire and surrounding areas. They provide the police and other emergency services with assistance for missing or injured people underground. Over the past few years they’ve been fundraising for a new rescue vehicle, which they took possession of in March this year. They now want to equip their new rescue vehicle with an Automated External Defibrillator. ME Derbyshire - £2,500 Self-help group that supports sufferers of ME/Chronic Fatigue System. They need funding for one year for the quarterly newsletter that they send out to their members. The newsletter keeps people up-to-date with news, especially those who are too ill to travel to meetings or those who live too far away to travel to Derby. The group also wants to provide some information packs to be made available for patients visiting a new CFS clinic that’s being set up at Derby City General Hospital. ME Derbyshire is also hoping to replace their ageing PC for a much-needed laptop. Groundwork Erewash Valley - £1,942 Local environmental regeneration trust working in Derbyshire. As part of their Community Food Team’s role they’re striving to raise the awareness of the physical and mental benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle by promoting and supporting activities and events which encourage healthy eating and exercise – e.g. through activities such a community allotment/garden development. They want to purchase mobile kitchen resources and equipment for indoor/outdoor cooking events and be able to provide gardening sow’n’grow activities and wider promotional events. Carsington Sailability - £1,080 Based at Carsington sailing club, the group provides the means, equipment and funds to enable people with disabilities to sail. Their grant is going to be used to help finance the purchase of equipment and materials to refurbish and re-fit a small sailing cruiser. Derby Soup Run Group - £1,000 This group feeds the homeless of Derby between 10 and 11 pm every night, giving out soup, hot drinks, bread and blankets and, of course, a listening ear. They’ve been running for 21 years. Their grant is going to be used for a year’s supply of polystyrene cups. Rosehill Infant and Nursery School - £775 Children attending this Derby City school come from different ethnic backgrounds and have children from England, Pakistan, India, Somalia, Poland and Israel. The school’s mid-day supervisors have set themselves a voluntary project to buy toys and games so that the children can all play together. They want to buy a Friendship Bench for the playground so that lonely and new children can sit on this and then be looked after by a Playground Buddy who can help them and welcome them into their new school. Eventide Lunch Club - £500 Lunch Club for senior citizens in Stanley Common and surrounding villages. Some of their customers are disabled and attending the club helps them mix with other people. They desperately need a new freezer as well as other catering equipment. William Shrewsbury’s Walking Bus - £500 William Shrewsbury Primary School in Stretton has a Walking Bus for children to walk to school, under the supervision of parent volunteers, which helps reduce traffic outside the school gates. The Walking Bus would like to buy waterproofs for the children and adults to keep them dry in wet weather and buy some book-tokens to reward the children for their good work. United Alvaston Junior Angling Club - £500 Club for 11 to 16 year olds that’s intended to “eliminate crime through sport”. The Club is endorsed by the Sporting Futures charity. Their vision is to use sport and recreation to encourage social inclusion throughout Derbyshire to develop healthy, crime-free communities. The angling club want to use their grant for fishing and rod licences, fishing permits, insurance and NFA fees. Nottingham Road & District Allotment Association - £150 The group has created a mini allotment site within the grounds of Meadow Farm primary school in Chaddesden to teach 9 and 10 year old pupils about growing vegetables, recycling and the wildlife on an allotment site. They need more gardening tools, seeds and other gardening equipment to keep the project viable. Money Mountain 2005 will take place in October. More details to follow later. |
