Channel Island swimmers impress at Glasgow 2026

Guernsey's Tatiana Tostevin set a new island record in the women's 50m backstroke at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The 23-year-old, competing in her third Commonwealth Games, swam 29.59 to take 0.09 seconds off the previous mark she set in February 2019.

She finished seventh in her heat which was won by Canadian Olympic medallist Kylie Masse.

Tostevin, who was 18th overall, was 0.26 seconds off earning a place in the semi-finals as team-mate Tallulah-Mae Rautenbach finished 28th overall while Jersey's Megan Hansford was 27th and Molly Staples 33rd.

Meanwhile Jersey's Clara Ginnis progressed to the final of the women's 400m individual medley.

The 18-year-old finished fourth in her heat in a time of 5:05.83 to qualify eighth-fastest.

Fellow Jersey swimmer Hannah Sterry was one place behind her in 5:09.85 while Guernsey's Oriana Wheeler was 10th-fastest.

Jersey's Matthew Deffains was the fastest Channel Islander in the men's 100m freestyle as he clocked 52.58 to finish seventh in his heat and 41st overall.

Guernsey's Henry Bolton won his heat in 54.20, finishing 49th overall.

Elsewhere Jersey's Sam Sterry was third in his men's 800m freestyle heat while Emma Bourgaize was 22nd overall in the women's 50m breaststroke after finishing seventh in her heat in 35.06 seconds.
