  1. Tuchel feels 'very alive' amid first World Cup experiencepublished at 11:35 BST

Mexico v England (Mon, 01:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel was asked to describe his first World Cup as England manager and what has challenged him the most:

"It's an unbelievable experience to be honest.

"I am living in a bubble, doing what I love the most on a daily basis, having these amazing players around me that I selected. I'm so grateful for it, to have these amazing characters, these amazing players every day around me, feeling the energy, planning training, seeing training, analysing training, trying and helping and supporting and then going through the matches, going out of the bubble, going to a venue, seeing the excitement, seeing the England fans, seeing them sing, seeing the connection between the team and the fans.

"Then you go back into your bubble and prepare the next match. It's a very unique experience. And then you step out in a venue like this just now before and you know that you're in such an iconic place and you have the chance to be part of it. I'm very grateful for that. It makes me feel very alive.

"It hopefully brings out the best in myself because I want to live up to the expectations that I have for myself and the trust that anyone puts in me. But I think we are there and it's a fantastic experience."

Sleep - or the lack of it - is certainly a big talking point, both in Mexico and for fans around the world.

Thomas Tuchel is not worried though.

The England manager and his players should still be safely tucked in their beds- it's just gone 4:30am in Mexico.

But let's see what Tuchel had had to say on other topics in his pre-match news conference, which was held just after midnight, UK time...

I’d expect everyone in England to be up watching this one. As an Arsenal fan in NZ where 4am kick-offs are the norm I don’t see the problem. Happily for us down under it’s 8am for Norway v Brazil and a midday ko for Mexico v England. Perfect.

  6. 'I don't want to talk about problems that don't exist yet'published at 11:21 BST

Mexico v England (Mon, 01:00 BST)

    England

Here is what England manager Thomas Tuchel had to say at his pre-match news conference on Saturday when asked about their hotel stay in Mexico City and whether he was worried about his players getting enough sleep:

"We had no issues tonight [Friday night into Saturday morning] and I think Fifa took care of the situation. We have security around the hotel so we expect a good night of sleep.

"We have a 6pm kick off, so if we miss some hours of sleep we will have time to get some other hours in the late morning.

"I don't want to talk about problems that don't exist yet. It feels not right and what I experienced until now was very respectful.

"It was very emotional but also very supportive toward our team. So we are very respectful to everyone. We respect the opponent, we respect the occasion of the match and then we expect also to be treated with respect. That was the case.

"To talk now about potential problems does not make sense to me. If they come, we will accept them. That's the whole approach for the whole tournament. It's a demanding tournament in itself. The best way to approach it is to be relaxed and calm and focus on us."

  7. 'Relaxed atmosphere in camp'published at 11:18 BST

    It's very relaxed.

I think England will have taken a lot of confidence out of the DR Congo game. To have shown that resilience and to have come back in the second half, with the two goals, I think that has really lifted the mood.

From the moments I spent with them this afternoon, there really seems to be a relaxed atmosphere in camp, for sure.

  8. Fireworks won't faze the playerspublished at 11:16 BST

    Alan Shearer
    Former England striker

The confusion over the kick-off time just added to the noise around this game, but I don't understand how it could have been changed and brought forward earlier than the scheduled time. It was a silly idea because of the way it would have impacted the thousands of fans flying in from all over the world to watch it.

It's been noisy enough in Mexico City anyway - I saw the reception England got when they arrived at their hotel on Friday, and we know Ecuador were kept awake by car horns and fireworks before their last-32 tie.

I would not be surprised at all if we find out later that there was some disruption for England the night before their game too, from an alarm going off at their hotel or something similar. That's nothing new - it sometimes happens when you stay anywhere before a Premier League match as well.

It's annoying but you have to accept it and get on with it.

If it happens, I don't think it will faze the England players, and neither will Mexico's record at the Azteca.

Again, I've heard a lot about that in the past few days, and how they have only lost two out of 89 competitive matches there since 1966.

It's a run of results that deserves respect, but when you look at the list of teams they have played, then they have not exactly faced great opposition every time.

It certainly does not make me think they are unbeatable and again, from a player's perspective, it is the kind of thing you are aware of and think, 'fine, we will embrace this challenge as well'.

If [Jarell] Quansah is fit then I think Quansah starts [at right-back].

We don't know how bad the injury was.

An injury to me is when you have a tear, when your muscle has come apart.

When you rock your ankle you can ice it and you can strap it and play through no problem at all. It is just pain. It's not an injury, it is just pain. So he should be able to play through that.

Quansah will start, I think, if he can get through the game.

Mexico v England (Mon, 01:00 BST)

Declan Rice is likely to be available to start England's World Cup last-16 tie against Mexico on Sunday despite an ongoing injury issue.

The Arsenal midfielder has been playing with a nerve problem that affects his hamstring and lower back and was substituted in injury time of the 2-1 win over DR Congo in the last 32.

Speaking after that game, manager Thomas Tuchel said: "I asked him. He said 'I can do it for the team but I am in terrible pain.' When Declan tells you he is in terrible pain then you know he cannot take it any more."

Reece James missed England's final training session before their World Cup last-16 tie against Mexico but Jarell Quansah is available for selection again.

Right-back James has missed England's last two matches after suffering a hamstring injury in the closing stages of the goalless draw with Ghana.

The Chelsea defender is yet to train fully with the squad since the injury and was absent for Saturday's session in Mexico City.

There was positive news however with regards to Quansah, who has returned to full training and will be fit to face Mexico on Monday (01:00 BST).

Quansah, who can play at centre-back or full-back, suffered an ankle injury in the draw with Panama, but his return to fitness eases Thomas Tuchel's concerns at right-back.

Djed Spence was selected at right-back for the victory over DR Congo but midfielder Declan Rice finished the match in that position.

Is there a more uncomfortable game [at this World Cup]? I don't think there is.

During this World Cup I have been to Seattle, to Vancouver, to LA and I've been to MetLife in New Jersey and I have seen Mexico fans everywhere. They have not even been playing in that city or that area, but they are around, they are in the country, they want to be part of it. They are absolutely manic fans.

If England get over this one, they have got a chance [of winning the World Cup]. I think this is the biggest game. In that stadium, if England can get over this hurdle, which is huge, then who knows?
