This feels different. We've been fairly lucky over the last 3 World Cups with performances and moments that have made us all so proud. But this tournament feels different. There is a confidence and belief within this squad, and with Tuchel's tactics? Maybe it's coming home. I said maybe...

    Joe, Kent

7 coffees deep and no sleep! Immense pride in those boys, proved they’re fighters. Played like champions…I told myself not to get ahead of myself but…is it safe to dream yet or am I just tired…?

    Elliott, Wakefield

If England can win at Azteca against the odds. Then there's nothing stopping them getting to the final. Any team facing England now have to be worried.

What an absolutely brilliant night for England.

I've done six major tournaments with England and that is by far the greatest night that I've witnessed.

It was utterly compelling and what a great result for them.

  7. 'What an incredible night'published at 09:15 BST

    Mexico 2-3 England

    Alan Shearer
    Former England striker

Those players have represented their country in magnificent form tonight.

Every single player had the right attitude.

Everything that could have gone against them, everything that was thrown at them, the energy, the altitude, they have got past all of that and they deserved it.

That is an incredible performance from start to finish.

When they were under the cosh the manager made the right substitutions. The subs came on and they did their job.

    What an incredible night.

Football eh, John? It can do that to you.

The final whistle has just been blown in the re-run on BBC Two.

Those last few minutes were tough. But after a clearance from John Stones, heroic block and header from fellow substitute Dan Burn and a final save from the brilliant Jordan Pickford and the celebrations could begin.

"Forty years on from the 'hand of god' the football fates have smiled this time," says commentator Guy Mowbray.

Let's get some full-time reaction from pundits, players and manager...

Did I watch the match? No. I'm not a football fan. But I'll tell you what. I woke up at around 6, looked at the BBC app, saw the result... and... I cried. Yes, I burst into tears. How's that for a 79 year old non-fan (in Manchester! Football city!)

I'm an 82 year old nana and I set the alarm and stayed awake to watch the most exciting game I've ever seen. A game that kept me awake and wondering what would happen next. Well done to the team, I'm a proud nana today.

From the "Hand Of God" to the "Gloves Of Pickford". Seems rather ironic and poetic that one of the main standout performers was our goalkeeper 40 years later considering what happened in 1986. Thanks Azteca, we're even now and what a game to do it in! Credit to Mexico too.

    Sorry for your loss Mary.

Football is meaningless really, in the scheme of things, but it can come to represent so much to so many people for completely different reasons.

When watching these World cup moments it is impossible not to think of the people who are no longer with us, who we would so love to share this with.

Glad to hear you were able to get some respite Mary, even for just a couple of hours.

    Mexico 2-3 England

My sister died last month and her funeral was on Friday. During this match, it felt like I was able to stop time - put grieving on hold for 2 hours. Can’t remember a better England performance. Back to reality now, but very grateful for the respite.

  17. Quansah challenge a red 'more often than not'published at 08:48 BST

    Mexico 2-3 England

    Sami Mokbel
BBC Sport Senior football correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live from Estadio Azteca

    It's incredibly unfortunate for Quansah.

He made his World Cup debut against Ghana and had to come off in the second half after rolling his ankle.

He had another opportunity today and unfortunately for him he is going to be suspended for the quarter final against Norway.

I don't think it was the wrong decision. When you watch it in the cold light of day, he's gone over the top of the ball...

Thomas Tuchel did complain slightly after the game that he thought it was perhaps a bit harsh and it wasn't the right call but I don't know.

Yes he has got the ball but he's gone in high on his opponent and more often than not those are red cards.

  18. Battle lines drawnpublished at 08:46 BST

    Mexico 2-3 England

Alan Shearer said that he did not agree with the penalty given to Mexico via VAR, which he believed did not follow the pattern of similar interventions earlier in the tournament.

Referee Alireza Faghani would go on to feel the wrath of England manager Thomas Tuchel - more on that later - but BBC Sport pundit Joe Hart believed that every one of the key decisions made in the match was correct.

Both Harry Kane and Raul Jimenez dealt with the pressure superbly to put away the resulting penalties.

With tempers frazzled Nico O'Reilly was accused of elbowing an opponent before the hydration break.

Djed Spence and Dan Burn replaced O'Reilly and Elliot Anderson as England went five at the back for the remainder of the game, which would include 11 agonising minutes of stoppage time.

I never watch football but all the excitement around the match meant that when I woke up and checked the time during the night I also checked the score to find us 0-2 up and I couldn’t stop watching thereon in! Hooked!

I’m not a football fan but decided to watch the match anyway, my heart was literally racing in the final 20 minutes, epic win for the team against the odds. I might be a convert to the game!

    Gail, Sevenoaks

Not normally a football fan but so glad I stayed up for the England v Mexico match. The England squad had so much to deal with, the temperature, being over 7000 feet above sea level and a hostile crowd. Just brilliant England.
