What do you do with the scraps of food on your plate when you're full? What about those manky out-of-date carrots in the bottom of the fridge... Well, from today people living in Wirral will begin to have weekly food waste collections... New rules for food waste collections in England came into force earlier this year...but dozens of councils are still not ready to provide the service. St Helens and Cheshire West and Chester already do it – Warrington & Knowsley began earlier this year, Liverpool has started pilot schemes, and Sefton council says it will be later this year. Wirral's food waste collections will start today, and Halton's in the autumn. So why does food waste recycling matter? Gail Jenkinson, Green Party Councillor for the Greasby, Frankby and Irby ward in Wirral, spoke to the BBC's Kevin Duala on why it has taken so long and how it may benefit your pocket.
