Writer Will Self: ’London is full of people who haven’t got an effing clue where they are’

Will Self was born in 1961 and grew up between East Finchley and Hampstead Garden Suburb. His dad was an academic and his mother worked in publishing. Self studied PPE at Oxford, but after graduating with a third class degree, he worked a variety of jobs including for the Greater London Council as a road sweeper, as a cartoonist for the New Statesman, and briefly as a stand up comedian. It was in 1991 that Will came to public attention, with the publication of his short story collection ‘The Quantity Theory of Insanity’. His fiction is known for being satirical, grotesque and fantastical, and predominantly set in London. Despite long-term illness and his current cancer treatment, Will is still working. He’s written 11 novels in all - the latest of which ‘The Quantity Theory of Morality’ was published this year. Will Self reveals his favourite haunts, memories, pet hates and everything in between with Robert Elms.
