Feelgood favourites, hidden gems and fresh new tunes to groove and soothe you. DJ Spoony serves up a brilliant selection of classic soul, disco, soulful house, R&B, funk, UK garage, reggae, hip-hop, doo-wop, yacht rock and more. Our genial host also gives his ‘New 2 Spoon’ record of the week another spin. Elisabeth Troy, one of the stars of Radio 2's The Music Is Black concert at the Hackney Empire, is the Rewind Selector. Elisabeth chooses the tracks that take her back to the dance floors of her youth. One of the most distinctive and versatile voices in UK dance music, Elisabeth emerged from the jungle and hardcore scenes of the early 1990s and went on to become a defining presence across UK garage, drum & bass, house and crossover pop. Her vocals on “Enough Is Enough” with Y‑Tribe helped establish Elisabeth as a key club voice of the late 90s. Listeners will recognise her instantly from a string of influential collaborations, including MJ Cole’s seminal UK garage anthem "Crazy Love" and the genre defining "Sincere". Elisabeth has worked extensively with Clean Bandit, both in the studio and as a live performer. Her most recent project, The Betty Black Revue, has allowed her to step away from the dance‑feature vocalist role and front her own fully realised live soul project. The Music Is Black concert is one of many wonderful shows that are part of a pan BBC season in collaboration with V&A East museum. Last month Spoony and Trevor Nelson hosted a unique celebration of Black Music in Britain featuring the Chineke! Orchestra, the LJ Singers directed by Chris Cameron, Alison Limerick, Courtney Pine, Rhoda Dakar, Omar and Elisabeth Troy. Another virtual trip to V&A East Museum looks at a photo of celebrated musician Fela Kuti and his band Africa 70 on the rooftop of Abbey Road studios in London. Ezra Collective's Femi Koleoso is your tour guide tonight. To hear the special two-hour show in full search 'The Music Is Black: DJ Spoony's Selection' in the BBC Sounds app. Spoony wraps things up with a Midnight Feast track. Think big production, lush orchestration, and the best voices in the business! To listen on most smart speakers, just 'ask BBC Sounds to play The Good Groove with DJ Spoony'. Produced by BBC Audio for BBC Radio 2.
