In February 2000, just a few weeks into the new Millennium, Stansted Airport found itself at the centre of the longest-ever hijack situation on British soil. The Boeing 727 Ariana Airlines flight had more than 150 passengers on board, who were being held at gunpoint by nine Afghan hijackers.
