All this week, Donald Macleod is reflecting back on an interview he did with Stephen Sondheim in 2010 and updating the story of how Sondheim revolutionised the world of Musical Theatre. Sondheim was a master of rhyme and was often within arm’s reach of a copy of Roget’s Thesaurus or Clement Wood’s rhyming dictionary. He never had a long-running, block-busting musical like Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera or Miss Saigon, but his self-imposed remit was to experiment and push the boundaries, and never to do the same thing twice.
