Actress Amanda Barrie: ‘I love watching Covent Garden come to life’
From gangsters to royalty, this Listed Londoner has seen it all in the West End.
Born in Ashton-under-Lyne in Lancashire in 1935, Amanda Barrie is an actress whose career spans more than 60 years across stage, film and television.
She trained at the Arts Educational School in Chiswick and later settled in Covent Garden where she’s lived since the early 50s.
Perhaps her most well-known role came in 1964 in Carry On Cleo - as the title character Cleopatra opposite Sid James as Mark Antony.
In 1981 she joined Coronation Street as Alma Sedgewick, a role she would play on and off for 20 years.
Now 90, Amanda is still working and has just released a memoir called I'm Still Here: My 90 Years.
