100 Years of Marilyn Monroe: A New Season of Films Reframes her Legacy
As the centenary of the birth of legendary Hollywood actor Marilyn Monroe approaches in June, events have been announced around the globe to celebrate a 20th century cinema icon. As well as the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, the Cinémathèque Française, the National Portrait Gallery and the British Film Institute in London all have retrospectives on her life and career. While she has been labelled for decades as a sex symbol, the British Film Institute season of her films seeks to reframe her work and her legacy. Emma Jones discovers more for BBC Talking Movies.
