The Zoological Society of London - the charity that runs London Zoo - is celebrating its 200th birthday this year. So, in an age when people are much more attuned to the welfare of animals, Roma Wells asks: what are zoos for? She sees for herself some of the pioneering innovation ZSL achieved in years gone by, some of the work it does today to rescue threatened species, and finds out what's next for animal attractions everywhere.
