West Mercia Police continue their investigation into the death of 54-year-old Jamie Gawler in Hereford. Their suspect, Matthew Jonathan, is in custody but refuses to answer questions during interviews. Detectives face a race against time to uncover direct evidence connecting Jonathan to the murder.

Analysis of Jamie's financial data shows Jonathan using his bank card just hours after Jamie's last-known activity at a cash machine. He had taken control of Jamie's finances and his phone.

Seeking to learn more about Jamie's background, family liaison officers visit his family at home. When discussing how Jamie had offered Jonathan a place to stay after meeting him at a local homeless shelter, his family are not surprised. They describe Jamie as a kind and deeply loving man who was naturally solitary but always eager to help anyone in need.

Back at base, a major breakthrough comes from forensic analysis. A bloody footprint recovered from the crime scene is sent to a national specialist database. Despite the print being incomplete, it returns a rare match to the exact brand and tread of the boots Jonathan was wearing when he was arrested. Further footage from Jonathan's phone proves pivotal in the case against him. They question Jonathan a final time, challenging him with the mounting evidence.

Meanwhile, a separate emergency call alerts police to a violent incident in Telford, Shropshire. Responding officers arrive to find a woman with catastrophic, life-threatening injuries. Her partner, 46-year-old Lee Sargent, is arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. The case is taken on by the force's Vulnerable Persons Unit, a specialist team dedicated to domestic violence and sexual assaults.

Sargent claims he acted entirely in self-defence after being attacked first, pointing to a severe laceration on his own arm. However, the investigative team picks apart his account, and the evidence begins to tell a different story.

Miraculously, the female victim survives the assault after extensive emergency surgery. Seven weeks later, she returns home to face a long recovery from life-changing injuries, bravely speaking out about the controlling, isolating reality of her relationship.
