Moray stretches from the North Sea coast in the north to the Cairngorm mountains in the south. It includes a large stretch of coastline, the River Spey and the towns of Elgin and Buckie. As one would expect in a rural and coastal region the economy is largely dependent on farming, fishing and forestry and the region's famous whiskey distilleries.

Local politics are characterised by a distinctive brand of conservative nationalism. The parliamentary seat of Moray is held by Margaret Ewing for the SNP which also holds over two thirds of seats on the council.
