An artist's impression of how the new facility will look
Plans for a £31m leisure centre in the heart of Redcar have been approved.
The scheme will create 260 jobs and benefit the area by making use of local suppliers and tradesmen where possible.
Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council finalised the plans which it hopes will attract more residents and visitors to the town.
Work on the development between Kirkleatham Street and Coatham Road is expected to start in the New Year.
The leisure centre will include a six-lane swimming pool, dance hall and gym, as well as space for community projects.
Businesses will also benefit from the development which will provide space for small to medium sized firms.
Councillor Sheelagh Clarke said: "It is great news that the detailed plans have been approved and we can make a start on creating a real attraction for Redcar residents and visitors to the town.
"Redcar has waited a long time for improved leisure facilities and I can't wait to see this ambitious scheme start to take shape."
