The war in the Middle East has hit fuel and energy prices, but the economy has been surprisingly resilient with household spending and business activity holding up.
But higher bills may be taking their toll.
Confidence has been slipping. A slowdown might be brewing.
Comparisons between this Budget’s official forecasts and the last set published in March are tricky. The latter were finalised just ahead of the war in Iran starting and were outdated by the time they were published.
Some experts expect our economy to expand by about 1.3% across 2026 as a whole and perhaps a shade less next year.
But within that, there could be a bumpy few months. It all depends on the path of the conflict in the Middle East.
Even allowing for the war, that’s a fraction of the growth we used to see. There is much to do to turboboost prosperity.
