Speaking to reporters, the mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Bryan Masson says two paintings were stolen at the Renoir Museum and two were left behind.
The thieves abandoned the two paintings in the museum gardens as they fled from the scene, he adds.
Authorities initially believed only one painting had been abandoned.
