Nineteen people were injured this evening after a minibus collided with a freight train near the French entrance to the Channel Tunnel.

An inquiry has been launched into the incident, which resulted in two people being airlifted to hospital. None of the injuries were life-threatening, said Agathe Cury, the Under Prefect of the Pas-de-Calais region.

She added that this was "the first time an incident of this type has occurred" on an Eurotunnel loading platform.

Freight and Eurostar traffic have not been disrupted, Cury said.

The BBC's Evan Davis, who was travelling through the Eurotunnel to Calais at the time of the incident, witnessed blue light vehicles "concentrated on one of the platforms" as he entered France.

We're ending our live coverage now - for more details on the collision, read the BBC's full news story here.

  2. Incident seems to be contained to one platformpublished at 22:23 BST 15 October

Around the time of the incident, I happened to be coming through the tunnel from Folkestone to Calais.

I got an alert from Eurotunnel while we were on the train saying: "Service disruption due to an ongoing incident." We were directed off the train as normal and ushered off via the normal route.

I came through and there were some very clear blue lights concentrated on one of the platforms - presumably a freight platform - in this enormous terminal.

As I understand, this is how the service for lorry drivers works: lorries are parked on these big open vehicles and the drivers are taken by minibus to a safer closed carriage for the journey.

It seems to be one of these minibuses that collided with a freight vehicle on a platform.

I'm currently just outside the terminal, where I'm seeing fewer blue lights inside the terminal than there were earlier. I'm also seeing quite a lot of blue light vehicles leaving.

It all seems to have been quite contained on one platform.

There were plenty of cars queueing up at check-in when I drove past just now, and I saw some cars going through check-in, so despite the collision they weren't being held.

"This is the first time an incident of this type has occurred" on an Eurotunnel loading platform, she adds.

The Eurotunnel is a train service that runs under the sea between England and France.

It connects people from Folkestone in Kent to Coquelles in Pas-de-Calais on the French side.

Three different rail services operate through the tunnel - the Eurostar, a passenger train that begins in London and goes to several European destinations, freight trains which transport goods and Le Shuttle, which transports vehicles.

The incident involves a minibus transporting workers who were about to board Le Shuttle.
