Seeded Russell Winter won his sixth round opener in Hossegor finishing two points clear of second-place Brazilian Fabio Silva.

The 28-year-old started slowly but soon raised his game pulling out a 6.17 wave score and then a 7.27 to win the four-man heat.

The British number one's reward is a rematch with Silva. The pair are joined by Australian Chris Davidson and Spaniard Eneko Acero.

Tour leader Neco Padaratz, from Brazil, goes in heat 16 against Pablo Guitierrez, Diego Rosa and Tiago Pires and has a great chance to extend his lead over Australian Shane Beschen on the pro circuit.

Former Plymouth University Surf Club captain Sam Lamiroy had no answer to Australian Kurt Nyholm finishing last in heat two of round four.

British team mate Llewellyn Whittaker followed the Geordie out of the contest ten heats later after finishing third behind Matt Jones and Fernando Moura.

Hawaiian Daniel Jones was unlucky not to make the cut.

Despite some radical surfing in the 2ft surf, Jones was edged out by Brazilian Bruno Santos and Australia's Ryan Campbell. Earlier, North Devon's Scott Rannochen was outpointed by Frenchman Jean-Jacque Billard and Richard Sills in a thrilling round two clash that saw the lead change hands several times.

Former English champion Alan Stokes and fellow Newquay pro Mark Harris started brightly winning their openers in small 2ft beachbreak waves.

But in round three, their gameplan faltered first with Stokes finishing third to Brazilian Pedro Norberto and then Harris losing against New Zealand's Jay Quinn and Tim Boal, from France.

Nigel Gibb and Welshman Nathan Phillips also lost early on as did Helston's Jake Boex who had no answer to American Kyle Knox's forehand attack
