| | The Rip Curl Boardmasters at Fistral Beach, in Newquay, is being staged this week with 75,000 dollars prizemoney up for grabs. BBC Devon Online's surfing correspondent Simon Alexander has all the details: |
 | | | British surfers showed touches of class on the opening day of the 4star World Qualifying Series Rip Curl Boardmasters in Cornwall.
Past British Junior champion Johnny Fryer led the way winning his opening heat in 1-2ft waves at Fistral Beach in Newquay against Australian's Marc Lee and Matt Capel.
Fryer's 13.9 total was secured with just seconds to go in the heat. He scored 7.23 points on his last wave to take the heat in style.
The Isle of Wight surfer now meets Clint Kimmins, Shaun Burrell and Ricky Basnett. Newquay's Shaun Skilton came in 2nd in the following heat of round one to qualify for the second round with 7.33 points.
Skilton's powerhouse moves will hold the BPSA tourist in good stead against Zahn Foxton, Hugo Savali and Adrian Wiseman.
 | | Josh Ash | Bude's Josh Ash also booked a place in the last 128 with a second place behind American Noi Kualukakui in his opener.
The rising star is pitted against another American Wesley de Souza in his next outing along with Spain's Gonzalo Zubizareta and Australian Mark Visser.
Scott Duncan probably has the toughest heat of round two.
After winning the first heat of the contest he now meets in form Luke Munro, Travis Lynch and Hawaiian Chris Rodriguez.
Stuart Leithead, was an early British casualty finishing last behind Australian heat winner Leigh Sedley.
Welshman Nathan Phillips and Helston's Jake Boex start their Boardmasters' charge in round two. Boex is drawn against Aussie pair Joshua Lewan and Dane Ward and Brazilian Vitor Faria.
Phillips, meanwhile, is up against American's Matt King and Darren Muschett and Hawaii's Gavin Gillette.
Ex-Boardmasters champion Russell Winter, from Newquay, is not in action until round four where is up against Scott Wildin, from Australia.
The finals are due to be held this Sunday. The men's event runs side by side with the 4star women's Nokia Pro won last year by France's Emmanuelle Joly-Thomas.
British interest includes Helston's Robyn Sunshine Davies and Sarah Bentley, from St Agnes.
