Former Plymouth University Surf Club captain Sam Lamiroy, Welshman Nathan Phillips and Johnny Fryer, from the Isle of Wight all failed to make it into the last 64 at the Rip Curl Boardmasters event at Fistral Beach in Newquay. Lamiroy, one of seven Britons in round three, failed to find two high scoring rides and had to settle for third place behind Australian's James Wood and Kurt Nyholm. It was a disappointing result for the Perranporth-based surfer after his top four finish at the BPSA Champion of Champions in Sri Lanka just over a month ago. Fryer, with one victory already under his belt in round one, was taken out by South African Ricky Basnett and American Dane Johnson. Basnett had already beaten Fryer in the previous round. Phillips, meanwhile, never quite got going in the small one to two foot surf. The waves never suited his powerful style and he finished fourth behind Aussie Matt Jones and American Nathanial Curran. The remaining heats of the round were held up awaiting bigger surf conditions at Britain's richest professional surfing contest. Once surfing recommences, Cornishman Alan Stokes can expect no favours from Australian Sam Page or Spaniard Aritz Aranburu. Home advantage should give Stokes the edge, though. Helston's Jake Boex, hot from his second round victory, is a good bet with Aussie Jock Barnes, Brazil's Vitor Faria and Frenchman Simon Marchand his opponents. Newquay-based Llewelllyn Whittaker is up against Constantine rival Micah Lester. The pair met in the final at the recent Sri Lankan Air Champion of Champions in Aragum Bay with Whittaker finishing in second place with Lester fourth. The re-match should be an intriguing affair with much smaller waves for the pair to perform on. Bude's Ruebyn Ash is the first British wildcard to see some action. The European title holder is drawn against Jeremy Flores, TJ Barron and Daniel Redman in heat 14. Ex-Boardmasters champion Russell Winter, from Newquay, is not in action until round four where is up against Scott Wildin, from Australia. Wildcard Mark Harris is also seeded into the last 64 against South African Travis Logie. The finals are due to be held this Sunday. | | Robyn Sunshine Davies carries British hopes in the women's pro. |
In the 5star WQS Nokia Women's Pro, British hopes rest with Helston's Robyn Sunshine Davies. The O'Neill team rider is seeded into round three against Brazil's Jacqueline Silva, Australian Rebecca Woods and American Jula Christian. Nichola Bunt, from St Agnes, won't be joining her after finishing last behind Australia's Amee Donohoe in the last heat of round two. English women's champion Kay Holt and Sarah Bentley, from St Agnes, both bowed out of the competition in round one. Back to Simon's surfing diary page >>>
