Review: Zipp! at the Theatre Royal
Giles Brandreth
Dressing down...Giles Brandreth
Faster than a speeding bullet, was it Superman? No "Just Giles" hurtling at breakneck speed through the back catalogue of the best of the musicals.
An Easter treat?

Rocky Horror Sound of Music...

I went along to this show expecting a musical tribute, a homage to the great composers like Sondheim, Porter, Gershwin, and the ubiquitous Lloyd Webber.

But instead I felt like I was witnessing the plundering and desecration of their genius.

With piano accompaniment and a small cast, Giles Brandreth left me breathless but gasping in horror at what I was hearing.

Giles Brandreth
Playing for laughs...
The cast are talented and must surely find the show exhausting to perform, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth.

Several members of the audience are publicly humiliated with their sexual orientation being questioned. Just because Mr Brandreth wants to get a few laughs.

Wearing fishnets and suspenders, making play on the word "gay" and thrusting his "honourable member," he looked ludicrous and pitiful.

But I must admit that the rest of the audience seemed to be lapping up the innuendoes, and gave the show a good response.

A couple in the row behind me kept laughing out loud and saying "brilliant" and "very funny".

So it takes all sorts and one man’s meat is another man’s poison.

The show features a big alarm clock to time the performance and I was certainly glued to it - waiting for the end to be in sight.

Zipp! is only here for two nights then we can get back to something more entertaining. For me this was not an Easter treat but a bit of a rotten egg!
