Review: The Owl Service
Scene from the Owl Service
The cast in The Owl Service
The Owl Service at The Drum Theatre in Plymouth is a fantasy for children aged 10-15 - and it gets the thumbs up from our teenage reviewers, Natalie and Rosie Soper (ages 15 and 13).

Before we saw The Owl Service, all we knew about it was that it was a ghost story, so we didn't really know what to expect.

What we did see was creepy, captivating and even a little funny in places.

The play starts with a story about a wizard who made a woman for himself out of flowers.

The woman of flowers meets a hunter, and they fall in love.

The hunter kills the wizard, but the wizard comes back to life, and with a magic spear he kills the hunter.

He then turns to the woman of flowers. He didn't kill her. He didn't forgive her. He punishes her. He turns her into an owl.

Hundreds of years later, three teenagers are staying at a cottage in Wales with their newly married parents.

Alison finds some plates in the attic and becomes obsessed with the flowery pattern on them, and Roger (her step-brother) and Gwyn (the housekeeper's son) are constantly fighting for her affection.

There is also Huw, who everyone thinks is just a mad villager, but he turns out to be a lot more…

The characters' acting was very convincing, especially Alison, who had to do a lot of screaming when she was in pain (it actually worried me a bit!), and Huw, who seemed a bit crazy to begin with.

The scenery was very clever (look closely at it!) and the harp playing gave it a more spooky edge.

The Owl Service is very enjoyable, but younger children would find it hard to understand and possibly a bit scary.

However, we would recommend it to older children.
