Grease: stepping into Travolta's shoes
Grease scene
The high school hop
There’s more than a whiff of testosterone and Brylcreem hanging over the stage. That old fave Grease is back in town and Danny and Sandy are getting into Summer Lovin’.

REVIEW:

The casting of the lead roles in this musical is crucial. John and Olivia were supreme as Danny and Sandy in the movie version, and left very tight pants to fill.

The parts demand a balance of youthful energy, sexiness and virginal fragility.

Ben Richards as Danny
Ben Richards as Danny

Ben Richards was firing on all cylinders as Danny, capturing all the nuances Travolta injected into the part.

Looking very sexy in tight jeans, black leather and immaculately quiffed, he was every inch the stud muffin.

His experience and confidence of playing Danny shone like a beacon from the stage. In fact all the guys were great... even geeky Eugene.

Sadly, Suzanne Carley as Sandy wasn’t quite in the same league.

I was blinded by her white smile and blonde wig, but initially she lacked any great stage presence or charisma.

Suzanne Carley as Sandy

Still, this is her professional debut after appearing on Pop Idol, and with training and experience she’ll improve.

For the finale she seemed to love playing the vamp and looked great in the skin-tight black lycra and red heels.

However, her entrance as transformed Sandy really needed more of a build up.

Camp Moments on Campus

Apart from the guys in skimpy towels singing into shower heads, the campest scene was the glorious "Beauty School Drop Out" - although it could have done with a bit more dry ice.

Jason Capewell hit all those high notes and worked the audience well.

The girls in the show
Girls just wanna have fun!

The production does speed along like greased lightening!

It’s a fast, fun all-singing, all-dancing family show, with a great soundtrack, choreography and humour.

There were loads of very young children in the audience, so I felt rather uncomfortable with some of the more suggestive parts of the show.

The sexual tension needs to be bubbling, but why so many single finger salutes and crotch jokes?

Danny’s Rydell High School report card would see him winning straight A's - he held the crowd in the palm of his hand, but dear Sandy’s is going to say "could do better".

The rest of the cast get a B, meaning "Bravo" for their great effort, while the band get told to behave themselves and try to be a bit quieter please.
