FACTS

The BBC Devon Chestnut Appeal aims to raise in excess of £1m to help pay for a state-of-the-art unit for the treatment of prostate cancer.

The unit, to be built at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, will offer early diagnosis and treatment for patients from all over Devon.

Every year, 21,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and although it is generally a disease more prevalent in older men, more 'young middle-aged' men are being diagnosed.

Our judges had a tough job selecting the 12 finalists in the BBC Devon Wildlife Photo competition.

The quality of the photographs was outstanding - from the weird and wacky to the wild and wonderful.

They impressed us so much we decided to produce a special 2005 Wildlife Calendar featuring all 12 finalists.

We produced 2,000 calendars to sell in the run up to Christmas with all profits being donated to the BBC Devon Chestnut Appeal. Within weeks all the calendars had sold out.

The winner of the competition, voted for by users of the BBC Devon website, was the Red Fox (October) sent in by Mark Sellings.
