FACTS

In Saxon times the manor of Holsworthy was one of many Port Towns.

Each Manor had its Court Leet which was presided over by the Portreeve. He was responsible for collecting tolls and duties paid by traders.

The Port in Portreeve refers to a walled or enclosed town, a place of safe harbourage of goods.

The word reeve comes from the Saxon 'Gerfa' meaning steward. The powers and duties of the Court Leet have long since ceased but the tradition' is still carried on.

Every year on the eve of St Peters Fair the elected Portreeve and his officers hold a court in the Memorial Hall.

Holsworthy really has a lot to offer. There's Memorial Hall and Market Hall - which is now registered for weddings, the library has an internet to keep us all up to date, there are gardens, a museum and theatre.

Making music
A town band has been making music in Holsworthy for over 100 years. Craft fairs and antique sales are held regularly and there are ample facilities for the sport enthusiast.

Holsworthy pool
Making a splash - Holsworthy's indoor heated swimming pool

We've an 18 hole golf course, bowling club, an indoor heated swimming pool, sports hall, health studio, nature and cycle tracks, river and sea fishing, clay pigeon shooting and two archery clubs - I'm worn out just thinking about all that exercise!
Holsworthy AFC sports six teams, the first being in the South West league and the pitch at Upcott is floodlit, catering for local cup matches.

And pretty maids all in a row

A major one day agricultural show is staged in the last week of July each year, there's an excellent vintage rally on the last Sunday in June and a winter carnival in the second week of November.

The annual St. Peter's fair is held in the second week in July and on the eve of the fair the Chartered Court Leet meet to receive petitions and process around the town for the Annual Ale Tasting. On fair day itself a unique ceremony is enacted when a Pretty Maid is presented to the public at 12 noon at the west door of the church.

She's chosen as being the most deserving and handsome and noted for her quietness and attendance at church.
The ceremony dates from the gift of the Reverend Thomas Meyrick in 1841.

So what more do you need to know? Holsworthy's a lovely place but don't take my word for it, come and see for yourself.
