Devon Moods
by Lee Pengelly

Devon-born photographer Lee Pengelly has managed to capture the beauty and variety of his native county.

Pengelly, from Plymouth, has been to all four corners of Devon in all four seasons and photographed the things which make it the most beautiful county in the country - the moors, the rivers, the sea, the wildlife, the villages, and the historic buildings.

The coastline and countryside feature strongly - and Pengelly says one of his aims was not to take just the most obvious photographs, but also to catch the viewpoints which often remain undiscoverered.

These places, he argues, are "magical corners that convey the character and history of the county."

"My aim in this book has been to compile a selection of these photographs which I hope reveal the true character of Devon. I have tried to include the familiar and unfamiliar - but there are many places I have yet to discover," he says.

So, as well as all the likely suspects - such as Smeaton's Tower in Plymouth, Exeter Cathedral, and Clapper Bridge at Postbridge, there are also great views of the main railway line as it passes alongside the sea at Dawlish, and a wind- battered tree bathed in moonlight at Sheepstor.

The colour photos are divided into four sections: the coast; towns and villages; rural Devon; and Dartmoor.

The coast section has pictures of places like the Great Mew Stone in Wembury Bay; Lynmouth and Clovelly in North Devon; Lundy; Beer in East Devon; and Dawlish and Paignton in South Devon.

Cockington, Yealmpton, Plymouth, Exeter, Topsham, Buckfastleigh, Holsworthy, Uffculme, and Moretonhampstead are among the places in "towns and villages."

The "Rural Devon" section has some great wildlife and countryside pictures, and some of the most dramatic photos are in the "Dartmoor" chapter.
