A train ride and a day on the beach are the inspiration behind an art project in Exeter.

In June, a group of children aged 7-11 from the Spacex Gallery's Artclub in Exeter set off on a train journey down the Exe Estuary to Dawlish Warren.

The area here is a
national nature reserve as a result of the birdlife, which includes avocet, curlew, teal, Brent geese, oystercatchers, dunlin, redshank, grey plover, and godwits.

The youngsters spent the day on the beach at Dawlish Warren, collecting natural materials such as pebbles, sand and driftwood.

With them was a musician, to help inspiration, and an expert from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

Also on hand to help was local artist Jenny Mellings.

With the sea providing the backdrop, the children used the materials they collected to create a series of contemporary images depicting birdlife on the Exe.

Later, back at the Spacex, the children re-worked the pieces into nine original artworks.

The artwork is being displayed at Exeter Central train station from 25th September 2004 for up to a year.

With two million passengers passing through the station each year, that means a huge audience for the children's work - entitled 'Estuary Tracks.'

Hannah Reeves, education co-ordinator at the Spacex, said: "It's very exciting for the children.

"They've worked on the project, on and off, for three or four months.

"The pieces are much bigger than they'd normally work with. Each board had one, two or three people working on them.

"It's lovely for them that so many people will get to see their work."
