New Family Centres don't come cheap - in fact the one currently under construction at Beacon Heath in Exeter will cost around £800,000 to complete.

The team responsible for 'Pendragon House' has managed to secure most of the money needed with government grants and donations but there is still a shortfall of £120,000 which has to be met by the end of 2005.

And that's where the students at Exeter College come in.

Around 15 sixth-formers have decided to give something back to the local community by helping with the fundraising efforts.

They have come up with an initiative they have called Sixty in Six.

"We are planning to raise £60,000 in six weeks," says student Steph Lyon-Smith.

"It's certainly a daunting challenge, raising so much money in what seems like such a small amount of time, but we believe we have some great fundraising ideas, and we have some great events organised that everyone can get involved in over the next six weeks."

Steph says it's because the challenge is so big that it interested her and her peers.

"I'd never say no to a challenge," she told the BBC Devon Website, "and we all felt it was important that Exeter should have a family centre.

"Plus it's good for college students to do something worthwhile for the community and help dispel the myths that we're lazy and don't do anything," she said.

The new centre will provide services like childcare, family advice and nursing.

Steph and her colleagues are currently contacting all the businesses in Exeter to invite them to donate £10 to the cause.

29/06/06 - This is the week of the street shows! Due to lack of students actually in college, we have decided to just collect money and sell the wrist bands as people walk through to the entrance of the college, and surprisingly we are averaging on about £40 for half an hours collecting, during the lunch break! So its providing a nice steady income of money, and is a bit of a confidence booster! We've collected for the past 3 days, and with two days left this week, i think we should set our selves the target of £250 by the end of the week! We've also made plans for more events during the summer! We will keep you posted! Take it easy - Matt

Steph Lyon - Smith
As Matt has said we spent the day at the Craft Fair! Everyone loved the Wrist bands and were excited about the colours. We raised £134.31p ( Every penny counts after all!) We all had a fab day in the sun and it was a great place and atmosphere to launch our wrist bands. I would like to say a big thank you to our sponsers The Purple Company for helping us so far in this project! Update very soon. Steph.

18/06/05 - Release of the new wrist bands!! Rita, Steph, Charli and I all spent the day on the cathedral green today, and the exeter crafts fair, selling our new wrist bands and collecting some more money, they went down really well, people having never seen the new colours, and wanted to get there hands on the latest Charity band!! Good day was had!

Another weekly update from me! So i spent 4hrs today on the phone, calling buisnesses asking them to pledge £10 towards out campaign, actually wasn't as bad as i thought it would be, i managed to get a few to agree to pledge a tenner, and almost all of the other buisnesses to give me an email address so i could email them more details, hopefully this will persuade them into pledging! A few more weeks of this and hopefully we will hit our target! Keep it up everyone, its a bit tiring being on the phone all the time, but it will be worth it in the end!!! Take it easy all! Matt
