Complaint
The programme included an unscripted exchange between the presenter and a guest in which it was stated that the Government had done nothing to help restaurants over the previous 10 to 20 years and that the UK had the highest rate of VAT in Europe. In response to a complaint from a viewer the BBC acknowledged that both statements were inaccurate and offered an apology. However, the viewer argued that the mistakes were such as to require public correction.
Outcome
While noting the prompt acknowledgement of the errors, the ECU considered they were sufficiently material to require a correction on the public record. Accordingly, the complaint was upheld.
