Complaint
The programme included an item on the outcome of the Gorton and Denton by-election. One of the participants, Luke Tryl of the political research agency More in Common, offered an analysis in which he put the result in the context of what he called “the fragmentation of our politics” and argued that tactical voting would become at once more common and more complex. A viewer complained that Mr Tryl’s contribution was misleadling about the constituency itself and about tactical voting in general. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s standards of accuracy.
Outcome
It would have been clear to viewers in general that Mr Tryl was offering his own views, supported by an evidence-based analysis, rather than stating undisputed facts. Taking this together with the range of viewpoints expressed by other participants in the item, the ECU saw no danger that Mr Tryl’s contribution would have misled the audience.
