Film on murdered Met trailblazer being made, bbc.co.uk

Complaint

This article reported that a film was in production telling the story of the UK’s first female Asian police officer, who had been murdered by her husband, and included a statement that the director had worked with members of the officer’s family, who had shared their memories of her. A family member complained that this was untrue, and that the family did not endorse this, or any other re-telling of what they regarded as a private tragedy.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s standards of accuracy.

Outcome

In response to the complaint, BBC News acknowledged that the statement complained of reflected a misunderstanding of what the director of the film had told the authors of the article.  The article was then amended to make clear that members of the officer’s family had told the BBC they did not endorse the film, and a note explaining the reasons for the amendment was added.  In the ECU’s view, this sufficed to resolve the issues of complaint.
