Hot foots and flying visits

As I write it's 1346 days to go before the London Olympics.

Does that sound like a lot or a little to you?

On Monday's Inside Sport, we're interviewing Jacques Rogge, the President of the International Olympic Committee. It's the only interview he's giving while he visits London. He'll be in town to attend a meeting where those who ran the Beijing Olympics pass on their hard earned knowledge to the organisers of London 2012, who've already stepped up a gear since the 2008 Games ended.

We'll be hot-footing it down to the central London hotel where it's all happening in the afternoon. Usually on Inside Sport, we have done our big interviews a few days in advance, but this time it's going to be a fast turnaround.

We're taking two cameras, one on Gabby, one on the President, because it will make the editing process back at TV centre a little quicker. We're hoping Lord Coe, who heads London's organising committee will also stop by and answer a few questions.

So are you already excited about the Games coming to London? What aspects of the Games would you like to hear the IOC president talk about? Let me know!

We'd like your feedback

We're four editions into this run of Inside Sport and I wondered what you thought of some of the changes we have introduced for this set of programmes?

The first big change was to widen the make-up of the panel in the studio by bringing in different BBC commentators and experts like Brian Moore and David Croft.

We've also done a couple of programmes with a single theme - our second show was an Olympic special and the third show in the run was all football.

We've still managed to cover a pretty broad range of sports so far (rugby union, football, athletics, cycling, swimming, F1 and boxing).

So let me know your thoughts.

After the Summer of Sport, the autumn Inside...

Hello everyone and welcome to a new series of Inside Sport.

We're back after what must be one of the best summers of sport ever. Gabby has been to meet triple Olympic cycling gold medallist Chris Hoy to see how he's coping with his new found fame - he's even big in Japan as we found on the streets of Edinburgh (do tune in to find out what I mean).

Gabby will also be sorting through double-gold swimming medallist swimmer Becky Adlington's shoe cupboard. Gabby has her eyes on those glittering Jimmy Choos, though I'm not sure she and Becky are the same size.

Other stars already lined up (bar unforeseen disasters!) are England and Spurs star, David Bentley - it's been a rocky start to the season for Juande Ramos but David is confident things are looking up; the first big interview with Nick Faldo after the Ryder Cup; and we've been following Wasps and England's Danny Cipriani on the road back from that terrible ankle injury.

Matt Pinsent has been delving into the post-Olympic budget debate - how much money is each sport going to get and which ones will be cut? And he's also met the new head of UK Athletics.

I've taken on board the comments on my blog about the various ideas we have for this season. So - no viewers e-mails on air! Having a debate programme is a great idea and one we're working on; we will be on BBC iPlayer, too, but not until the weekend after we're broadcast, though you should be able to red button us on Tuesday night.

And we've also made some changes to our panel - Des Kelly, Steve Bunce and Tony Livesey will all return, but we're also getting some of BBC Sport's best talent in to talk about their sport. So watch out for Jonathan Pearce, David Croft, Steve Cram, Aggers, Brian Moore and more.

More news of exactly what's in show one - MONDAY 6 OCTOBER, 2330 BST, BBC ONE - next week.

It's good to be back and keep the comments coming.

Inside Sport: the third run

We've come to the end of this run of Inside Sport so I wanted to respond to a few issues some bloggers have picked out and also look forward to the next season and ask for your input into how we take the show on.

Perhaps the issue that provoked most response online was Mihir Bose's piece on racism in Polish football. The responses to the blog he wrote were overwhelmingly positive and some people had some thought-provoking points to make.

Some bloggers asked why we picked on Poland when other countries in Europe have a similar problem - witness Dick Advocaat's comments before the Uefa Cup final about how Zenit St Petersberg fans would not like him buying a black player.

But because Uefa has given the next Euros to Poland, we wanted to examine the problem the Polish authorities must face to host the event.

One Polish blogger felt we had targeted Legia Warsaw when some other clubs were even worse. The anti-racism campaigner in our film did make that point, but we chose Legia because they acknowledged they had a problem and were taking steps to deal with it.

As we take the programme forward, I would like to know if you think we should be looking more at "issues" within sport and doing pieces on them, or do you feel that might be a bit hard going late at night?

The perennial issue of covering a wide range of sports also came up on the blog.

Again in this run, we have covered a wide range of sports - rugby union, rugby league, football, Olympics, boxing, Formula One, sailing, racing, cycling, golf, cricket, tennis, swimming and Paralympic sports is the full list. But if you are an occasional viewer, you are going to miss some of these, so I can only ask you to watch more often!

I am absolutely committed though to keeping a wide range of sports on the programme. Are there some you would particularly like to see more or less of in the next run and why?

As ever, the centrepieces of the programme are the big interviews done by Gabby - are there names you would like her to meet for the next series?

And finally, I would like to explore ways of making the programme more interactive and involving the viewers on a more regular basis - is that something you would like to see and if so, how do you think viewers should be involved?

Traditional ways are:
1. Having an audience (which I think we could do for one-off specials if a hot enough topic was suggested...)
2. Reading out viewers' e-mails
3. Showing viewers' videos

Are these things we should be doing on Inside Sport? Is it something we should do on our website but not the TV programme? Are there other ways of being more interactive?

I have my own thoughts but I would appreciate yours on all of these subjects over the summer. I'll be back working on the show from mid-August and Inside Sport is back on BBC One, Monday 6 October.

Inside Sport's Olympic preparations

Inside Sport is back and we’re doing something we’ve never done before by going overseas to kick off the new series with Gabby, Matt Pinsent and Dame Tanni Grey Thompson in Beijing for a special Olympic programme.

We’re in the process of stitching all the different pieces together in the edit suites as I write this but already I can see just what a surprising place Beijing is.

We’ve all seen pictures of the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the exotic food – Tanni ate scorpions from one street food stall - but there are also amazing new skyscrapers, millions of cars instead of bikes and, just like any British city, a chain of pizza restaurants.

You’ll get a really good idea of what this fast changing city is like if you watch Inside Sport next Wednesday (20 February, BBC ONE, 10.50pm), but we’ve also taken a look at some of the big issues affecting the Olympics.

What steps are the Chinese authorities taking to make sure a drugs scandal doesn’t mar the Games? Will pollution be the big problem many athletes fear? And, in a country that traditionally hasn’t valued the disabled, will they be able to host a successful Paralympic Games?

Talking to Matthew after he came back, he said he had been struck by how much easier it was now rather than a few years ago to operate as a journalist in Beijing. The Chinese have had to bring in new, more relaxed rules for foreign journalists this year but even so, there were still an awful lot of soldiers and officials trying to stop us filming various things.

The Chinese are also making a huge effort to educate their people in the ways of the West. We met Mr Spit – the official whose job it is to tell off people who spit in public and explain to them that foreigners won’t take kindly to it! Meanwhile, adverts urge the population to smile when they see a Westerner and taxi drivers have been told to make sure their cabs are sweet smelling .

I don't think the people of Beijing have quite clocked what is about to hit them - thousands and thousands of foreigners, athletes, fans and officials - all descending on the city in a tidal wave in August. What effect this will have, nobody quite knows.

Finally, as you sit reading this at home or at work, spare a thought for those logging on in China. They won’t be able to read this as the BBC News and Sport website is banned.

2007: A year Inside Sport

Hi again all,

A few weeks ago we asked you for your favourite bits of Inside Sport from this year and you responded with most votes for Gabby’s interviews with Sven, Kevin Keegan and Justine Henin. There were also lots of votes for Steve’s first meeting with Ricky and Floyd and also Matthew Pinsent’s piece about the Iraqi war veteran, who lost his legs in battle but wanted to become a Paralympic rower. We only had time to show short clips on the programme but you can see all those pieces in full, either from the links on this blog, or together with many other key interviews and great features on the Inside Sport homepage.

It’s been a great year for sport and we’ve covered a lot of it on the programme but whenever I take people on a tour of Television Centre to watch Inside Sport go out, they usually come away impressed by the calmness of Gabby and the panel on screen.

I remember when we piloted Inside Sport – it was the one and only time we did due to cost and time pressures – and sitting next to Richard our director. Coming from News, I’ve seen some directors have to work flat out as crisis after crisis happens (broken satellite trucks, seeing the reporter but not hearing them, the computer server, that plays out all the reports crashes etc.) but I must admit to sitting in the gallery with some admiration watching the whirling dervish that was Richard as he directed that day. The thing is, we shoot the programme with cameras, and therefore the audience, all around the discussion and so it’s incredibly hard not to get the cameras in shot – somehow Richard and his camera operators have found a stylish way to do it.

Some people have asked whether we have paid any of our interviewees – the answer, I’m glad to say, is no and it will remain that way.

Well, we will be back next February with a special Olympic programme from Beijing following the big build up to the Games, the twist and turns of the Premier League season and all the big issues in sport through until mid-May.

Do join us then and don’t forget you can watch all your favourite moments on the website anytime.

What are your best bits on Inside Sport?

Thanks again for your e-mails.

Many of you said how much you enjoyed the Justine Henin interview and I must say it's probably my favourite interview of the entire series because it was such a surprise to be given so much time with her, and for her to be so very honest about her life.

She came across as a very genuine and thoughtful woman who has been through a lot of difficulties in her life and has now come to terms with it all.

We commissioned a survey this week of fans opinions about England and Steve McClaren - we've never done this before and I think we'll only do surveys on very few occasions - what do you think?

I thought the results were surprising and interesting, from reading the press in particular, but also remembering the way the England team was booed at the Andorra match.

I suppose I assumed fans would be less supportive of the England manager than they turned out to be, but that was the point of the survey of course - to find out what the facts were.

When I discussed the results with our guests in advance, they too were surprised. I think it's a good point to remember - a bandwagon may have begun in the media, but that bandwagon may not reflect the majority view across the country.

Finally can I encourage you all to e-mail us with your best bits! We want to know which bits of Inside Sport over the last year you've enjoyed most and we'll run clips of the most popular on our final show on 3 December.

At the moment - Steve Bunce on Hatton v Mayweather is out in front, followed by Dwain Chambers, Mark Ramprakash, Gordon Strachan, Luol Deng, James Toseland, Kevin Keegan, and UFC.

Another of my favourites is when Gabby met Ricky Hatton - what's yours? If your best bit isn't amongst this little lot, then please e-mail us your vote.

From cricket and boxing to Celtic's Strachan

Inside Sport has received lots of e-mails from you this week - many centred around the Duncan Fletcher interview.

We were very pleased to get the first chance to put to him the criticism from many in cricket and elsewhere about whether he should have revealed the secrets of the dressing room, and why he didn't deal with Andrew Flintoff at the time.

Lots of you felt he was cashing in and needed to write something that would sell a book, but others were more sympathetic.

This coming week we are interviewing Celtic manager Gordon Strachan - are there any questions you think need asking? Please let us know by e-mailing us through our website.

There were a couple of disappointed comments from viewers, as we didn't mention the excellent victory by Joe Calzaghe on the programme.

Regular viewers will have seen Steve Bunce's great film the previous week where he got really up close and personal wth Joe.

You can also see the BBC re-screen the fight at the weekend (I knew this on Monday and would love to have mentioned it on Inside Sport, but had been sworn to secrecy, as it wasn't publicly announced until Tuesday).

We didn't feature the Calzaghe victory because we aren't a version of a daily sports news service. We don't and can't mention every sports story from the week on the programme. We have to pick and choose what we do.

Having devoted a large part of the programme to Joe the previous week, I think it's hard to level a charge of "undercoverage" at the programme.

Anyway, keep the e-mails coming.

Taylor, Calzaghe and Team GB, UK, or not at all?

Hello again all, thanks for all your comments regarding this week’s Inside Sport, a selection of them are published here.

What a week it was! There was a lot of congratulation and support for Phil Taylor and Joe Calzaghe on the back of our interviews with them but the overwhelming public response has been to our story on a potential ‘GB’ (or ‘UK’) football team for London 2012.

It has actually been a first for us to run a football story and not receive e-mails asking why we prioritise the round-ball game, seemingly over all other sports.

Many of the comments we received were sporting and political opinions and I’m glad we’ve provoked them! Every e-mail raised a valid point – Who would ever manage such a team? What about the British Lions and the rest of the Olympic team? Would Scottish and Welsh players that played for such a team risk being pariahs? Is it 'GB' or ‘UK’ in Olympic sporting terms?

If you want to get in to the debate there’s a dedicated 606 thread here.

Some comments, however, asked about our coverage of the story, so a few answers for you:

Nicolas Ryan, Wales, was angered about a comment on our show to ban those FA that didn’t want to take part in ‘Team GB’ from the 2018 World Cup (should England get it) - the comment was just a bit of light-hearted banter during the paper review - I wouldn't take it too seriously, Nick.

Some felt the programme made it look like only Scotland were against the idea. I'm afraid I can't agree - it was clear in the headlines, introduction and in the script of the piece as well as in the interview with Simon Clegg that only the English FA is for the GB Team proposal and all the other three Home Nation FAs are against it.

For those asking about our team sheet graphic (a largely English team with a handful of Welsh and Scottish players): In the production team meeting before the show we were tossing around the names – Bellamy, Healy, McFadden, Brown, Miller, Eastwood, Bale, Gordon – and had a near full non-English XI, but the reason we put up the team sheet that we did was precisely to make the tokenism point and Des was very clear in his view that this would be a legitimate complaint from any Home Nation, if the team is essentially English with the odd Scot involved.

Also, thanks for all your supportive e-mails to Gabby about her efforts on Strictly Come Dancing. I shall pass them on to her.

Congratulations to Ron, our Assistant Editor, on his work on the Dolphins-Giants game, great to read the positive response it received.

How Inside Sport clinched top trio

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments again, many of them were about England's magnificent effort in reaching the Rugby World Cup final and also the subsequent debate over the future of coach Brian Ashton.

It seems odd to many people that the man who took his team to such success shouldn't be given a new contract straightaway.

For others, the rugby authorities are doing the right thing to have a process, a review and wait to decide the future of the coach - and players. On Inside Sport, we knew the minute England reached the final that, win or lose, we would want to try and get some of the boys into the studio to talk to Gabby.

So we deployed our secret weapon - our producer, Matt used to play rugby himself at a very high level and is one of the top producers for the sport here at the BBC.

He has also been making most of the Postcards with John Inverdale we've been running on the show throughout the competition.

Because he's been over in France a lot, he's been able to keep in touch with many of the players who have known him for a number of years and trust him.

This was a huge advantage for the programme and it was really down to Matt that Lawrence Dallaglio, Andy Gomarsall and Joe Worsley came into the studio.

The logisitics were a bit tricky though - first there was going to be a press conference at Heathrow, then one at Twickenham instead which all the players would need to go to.

In the end the conference didn't need to involve our players and Matt, who'd been following them all since they touched down, was finally able to get them into a car to BBC Television Centre.

It was great of them to give up their time for Inside Sport when they were so very tired and had given so much during their world cup campaign. I hope you all found the interview interesting.

Irish sport, Gabby, rugby shirts, and Scotland

Hello and thanks for the comments this week to Inside Sport.

As ever, a selection of your points and questions are published here. So, a few answers for you.

Some of you have asked for more Gaelic sport featured, I agree Gaelic football and hurling are excellent games and I used to watch a lot of them when I lived in Northern Ireland for a year back in the ‘80s. Unfortunately, I'm not sure they’re broadly popular enough to put on Inside Sport.

Just to reply to one viewer, Tony Livesey doesn't work for the News of the World, he's a sports presenter for the BBC's North West Tonight. But he was a newspaper man in his past. His view on England players' commitment was his view and the points you make, for example about the millions of pounds that weigh on every manager's decision about letting their players play, were precisely the points Des made in response to Tony - Des very much agreed with you. The comment about “tights”, I think, was just a bit of fun late at night.

Gabby says thanks very much to the viewer who gave her such nice comments!

More praise for the UFC piece - thanks again.

RWC shirts - I'm afraid John isn't doing us another postcard but I shall try to find out the answer about the shirts!

To the viewer who says we are a football programme and do not cover enough rugby union: I'm afraid I have to disagree about that. Kevin Keegan was the first football interview we've done this run, which began seven weeks ago with a Lawrence Dallalgio interview, no less. As you probably know, we have no rights to the Rugby World Cup and that makes it difficult for us to cover. We came up with the idea of getting John Inverdale - a man who knows his rugby - to do a series of five opinion pieces for us over the course of the competition. We felt this was a way of adding something different to the acres of coverage elsewhere and was quite a big commitment. In total it added up to nearly 30 minutes of coverage.

We have also invited members of the English rugby team to come on the programme next Monday.

To the Scottish viewer – I’m sorry you don’t feel we’re highlighting Scottish football success enough. There was a long piece and discussion we did about the Scottish football renaissance on our programme on Sept 17th. The story is up on the website.

Bunce, Bose and Ultimate Fighting

Hello again, everybody.

Thanks for all your comments, questions and the like this week. Some good points raised on Lewis, plastic pitches, more rugby league, and Ultimate Fighting. Don't forget, we publish a selction of them over here.

And for those asking about how sports news stories work across all media at the BBC (including Inside Sport and this website), Roger Mosey's latest blog covers just that!

Again calls for Mihir Bose to be on - I shall call him now!

FORMULA ONE
I'm afraid I can't agree, as one viewer wrote, that no important questions were raised in our F1 discussion. Will the Alonso/Hamilton rivalry spill over into danger on the track? Has the F1 spying scandal damaged the sport? If McLaren win the title will it be tainted? These are all important questions.

UFC
For all of you who liked our UFC feature, indeed Mr Bunce was very happy to do the piece but I'm afraid it wasn't his idea in the first place but one of our producers, so no need to "keep him happy" as someone suggests.

RUGBY UNION
One viewer didn't think much of John Inverdale's take on the Rugby World Cup. As you know, we have no rights to the footgage of the matches so we have to be a bit creative in how we deal with the RWC. I think John's postcards have been excellent - sometimes they've been more complex in their arguments, about the way the RWC is run or about the injury issue with supersized players, but this week I think it was a brilliant and honest commentary on how everyone had been ready to write the "Northen Hempisphere is rubbish" story and actually, as in all sport, there is always the chance of an upset and the sporting press ended up having to write the opposite story.

RUGBY LEAGUE
And about our piece on the transfer of Paul Cooke across Hull, just to say Tony Livesey is born and bred in the North and lives there; the producer of the piece lives in Yorkshire. The piece was over seven minutes long which is substantial in a magazine programme and we interviewed the chairman of both clubs at length in the piece as well as fans and Paul Cooke himself.

Hair, Hull, hoops, and more

Thanks for all your feedback on Inside Sport. Don't forget we publish a selection of your comments, so feel free to contribute, either on this blog or our dedicated page. Here are some answers to the points and questions you raised:

CYCLING
Could we do a feature about David Brailsford and his hopes for Olympic triumph? In the next run of Inside Sport we'll be doing a lot of Olympic items in the run up to Beijing, we'll put this idea in the pot we'll be looking to choose from.

BASKETBALL
For those that were wondering about our basketball debate, I think Buncey was trying to say he thinks, of all the American sports coming to London this autumn, basketball is most likely to become Britain's fourth sport after football, rugby and cricket. And he was also talking about whether a big NBA-style competition could ever happen in the UK.

FORMULA ONE
Why don't we have more Formula One? Our big problem is that we don't have access to any F1 pictures. You may notice BBC News does but only for a limited period after a Grand Prix. Inside Sport, under the terms of the rights agreement with F1, is not classed as a pure news programme. That makes it very hard for us to do pieces with no action at all. However, our Inside Opinion piece a couple of weeks ago was on F1 and this Monday coming, if Lewis Hamilton wins, as he may well do, we'll have a lot on Formula One.

PROGRAMME
When we get a decent news line we think it's right to let as many parts of the BBC's audience hear it and that's why we always make sure the other parts of the BBC's sport output like Radio 5live get access to our journalism. So we're not "leaking", we're trying to give maximum value for the BBC's audience. Yes, Mihir Bose is indeed a great asset to the programme and when he has a story he always comes on.

HULL
One viewer felt our Rugby League piece was a little unfair. I don't think we tried to portray Hull fans, FC or KR, as hooligans - the pitch invasion was described as quite out of the ordinary by Tony Livesey and it only made up a very short part of the film. The defection of Paul Cooke has added spice to the long-held rivalry this season but you are right, there are many other sporting rivalries in the world and it was this that we picked up on in the studio chat afterwards.

DARRELL HAIR
We received a wide range of opinion on this, though some felt we did not address the racism issue. In fact we did point it out in the piece and put to Darrell Hair the allegation that he was racist - the piece contained his answer where he disputed that allegation. He, in turn, has accused the ICC of racism, this too has been denied by the ICC and was contained in the piece.

Thanks again for all your comments, suggestions, and questions. Keep them coming!

Inside Sport feedback

Thanks for all your comments.

There was one person unhappy about Matthew Pinsent's piece on cycling, feeling the BBC was wrong to highlight the drugs issue, whilst not covering cycling all that often.

I would point out that the BBC did have some of the Tour of Britain rights. It is also hard to think the drugs issue wasn't a worthy one to do on Inside Sport when the Tour de France had experienced a drugs problem for the second year running.

I hope the piece illustrated not only the problem - for example the difference in views about punishment for dopers was neatly illustrated by Millar and Wiggins and reflected again this week, as the Italians and Spanish refused to do Pat McQuaid's bidding on the doping issue - but also showed what some teams are trying to do to combat doping.

As for our coverage, we are showing the World Road Championships in Stuttgart on BBCi, BBC TWO and online.

One viewer asks why we're not covering Olympic sports judo and taekwondo… I also have more e-mails asking why we're not covering other sports. All I can say is that in this run we have covered a wide range of sports - football, rugby, cricket, boxing, but also these Olympic sports; sailing, cycling, tennis and athletics... and no doubt in the run up to Beijing we will do some more.

And finally, why did we not have any Twenty20 Final coverage? Well this is very tricky for us - we don't have the rights.

It's one reason why I was keen to get Freddie Flintoff on the show before the tournament started, so at least we had some cricket on the programme. But the viewer is quite right, we should have highlighted the photos on the newspaper back pages - the clock ran out but we should have made time for that. Apologies.

And there will be another big cricket interview in a few weeks. It will probably be on 5 November - so stay watching!

Freddie and Christine on Inside Sport

It was a different kind of edition of Inside Sport this week. We had filmed an interesting interview with Andrew Flintoff before he flew off to South Africa to the World Twenty20 but we also secured an interview with Christine Ohuruogu a couple of days before the programme.

So we had two big interviews not just one. It's interesting to read some of the viewers' comments on the website - there were some who thought Christine came across very well but thought she should have simply had the drug testers into the family home and not worried about the disruption to her family if that's what it took to guarantee being there for the tests.

There were also some who thought we were too tough on her and others who wanted us to push her further. The same is true of the Flintoff interview - some thought we didn't ask all the questions we should have and others found it quite insightful.

For my part I think the interviews were really quite different - I felt we did push Christine strongly, asking her outright if she'd taken drugs, pushing her to pledge alliegance to Britain which she didn't, and pointing out it was entirely reasonable for some people to have suspicions given she had done so well so quickly after her ban.

I also think it's important when we interview people to give time enough to answer.

The Flintoff interview was a chance to see him off the field a bit and talking about his life, his career, and his family. He did make some news with his revealtion about never getting on the pedalo and the need for a constant lifetime rehab programme for his ankle and also his desire to captain England again one day. There was a lot of debate in your responses about that - as the team already has two captains, his chance may be some way off, but there's no doubt he lifts the team when he does play and surely that's at least part of what a captain needs.

Some of you have asked about the video podcast - the BBC's trial of these has come to an end and bods higher up than me are deciding how to go ahead with the project - watch this blog in the coming months for a decision. But meanwhile all the best bits are on the website.

Thanks again for your comments.
