Zelda: Spirit Tracks review

There are certain games, from certain games series I await. The Zelda series is one of those and Spirit Tracks was certainly one of those games. As soon as it landed on my desk, I had ripped off the plastic and shoved it straight into my DS console and got down to business. I do promise however to be constructive with my review, though I'm a massive fan.

Spirit Tracks is the second original Zelda to grace the DS console, and like its predecessor Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass it is styled in the same cell shaded fashion we saw on the Game Cubes Zelda: Windwaker.

So the story goes as follows... Link (You) are a trainee steam engine driver and have been summoned to Hyrule castle by princess Zelda to graduate as a full fledged driver. Once you get there it all kicks off and I'm not going to spoil it for you but as most my favourite games entail, you have to save the princess.

This style of game is perfect for the DS, almost what the DS was made for (which wasn't cookery games may I add). The use of the stylus with this game is almost compulsory. Movement, attacks, puzzle solving and train driving all come under the stylus which I like, it frustrates me even when games don't abuse the touch screen technology.

Something I love about Nintendo, over other games companies is there ability to make things simple. A game like Zelda could be considered quite complicated with its train driving, multiple sword fighting techniques, very tricky puzzles and general detail that has been put into a game, but the designers of this game have made it very easy for it all to become second nature to you. Every tutorial is implanted into a small task which is easy and becoming more tasking the further you get into the game.

My favourite thing about Spirit Tracks is the beautiful level design. The temples and the lands around them are beautiful to look at even on your DS and its the simple things that really make this game an instant classic.

The sound design like any Zelda is very clear and well orchestrated. I still think though that Link sounds like he is swearing when he does a bit attack.

Between playing the game and doing this review I still haven't managed to complete it, and I can tell you, I've played it ALOT. This game is long and if you are looking for a game to get you through the cold winter period, this game is definitely the one.

Now for my complaints. This was hard because though i am genuinely a huge fan of the Zelda series, but this game is great. Everything is very smooth, easy and fun to play and long enough to take you through to 2012. If I had to improve anything, is that the story takes a little while to fully get going and it could do with being a few gears faster. I do think that doing that may effect how easy the game is to fall into.

I wanted to give this game a 4 star rating to prove I wasn't being biased, but i can't. It's too good. Sampage out.

Rated: 7+
Available: Nintendo DS only

Whats the longest you've played a game??

Hey, SamPage here. I want to tell you a short and sad tale, which is hardcore gaming related.

When I was 13 years old, Final Fantasy 7 was released on the Playstation and me and my friends were all hooked. As soon as I was home from school we were sat on the console, waving swords and using magic to will our way through the world that was Final Fantasy. 45 hours later the game was completed. (I've since then completed it in 12hours). Now there are a string of hardcore RPG/Action adventure related games which have been released on the Final Fantasy series and in many other series including Zelda, Oblivion, Dragon Quest and Pokemon.

What we wanted to know is what's the longest amount of time YOU have played a game for? I once played for 24 hours solid for charity which was quite exhausting but kind of awesome. Also what do you guys think it is that keeps you playing the game in question? Answers on a postcard...

Rampage's guide to gaming: Sport games

Sports games are forever being produced at the highest standard of gaming, with new yearly games coming out to give you a better experience, higher quality graphics and player updates. Now with new consoles the options to challenge players online has really lifted the genre to extra levels. Some of the biggest sporting franchises take part. Soccer (Fifa, Pro Evo), Basketball (NBA), American Football (Madden). If you like sports games your choices are always endless and fresh.

What sports games keep you hooked to the console?

Chech out what Rampage have to say on the subject below.

Scott Mills as part of Gaming week on Radio 1 & 1xtra got in a few of the older types to play some games with him. It's fair to say Scott isn't the biggest gamer, but neither are the pensioners we bought in so it should have been a good challenge.

Watch the video below to check out the outcome.

Shoot 'em Ups and war games in general have been floating around since the dawn of gaming. Doom, Turok, Duke Nukem, Medal Of Honor, Call Of Duty.... you could go on forever about the greatest FPS' (First Person Shooters) out there. My personal favourite was Golden Eye on Nintendo 64. It really moved the genre in a new direction with mission based story play and clever puzzle work.

What has been your favourite FPS?

Its day three of Rampage's guide to gaming. Wednesday was racing games. Racing games have been around a long time, and I mean a long time. Gran Trak 10, released by Atari in 1974 is generally considered the first racing game released but in the last 35 years a huge amount has changed.

With cartoon classics such as Mario Cart and Micro Machines and realistic NOS pumped games such as Gran Turismo and Need For Speed both dominating the market, its unsure where the racing game genre could go next?

Listen below to hear Rampage's basics of the racing game genre

Fifa becomes the biggest selling sports game of all time

Hello Games world, Sam Page here. I just wanted to share with you a bit of news that has just crossed my desk. Mike and Treble T have been arguing back and forth about football games for the last two weeks. Is it Pro Evo? Is it Fifa? Whichever is the best makes no difference to the hardcore fans out there of either game, but what I have found out is some stats on the sales.

Fifa 10 has just become the fastest selling sports game of all time, selling a huge 1.7 million copies in its first week in Europe alone. Since the game launched, 10 million plus matches have been played online whilst 155,000 plus players have been clocked online at peak times. Is Fifa going to take the crown this year?

Check out Mike's review of Fifa 10 here

Now you guys have had a week to play the game, what are your thoughts?
