Zap-happy brains - a response

We've followed up the interview we ran last week with the neuroscientist Baroness Susan Greenfield . She raised a number of concerns about the potential impact of computers on the development of children's brains and the capacity for concentrated reading and thinking.

You can listen to an unedited version her interview on the blog.

Thanks for your comments responding to her - our colleagues at Have Your Say also had a huge response for a debate they ran on the subject.

This week on iPM, we have two responses to Professor Greenfield.

Firstly, the philosopher Julian Baggini

Add IPM Radio4's channel to your page

We also spoke Ben Vickers, a 21-year-old who's recently finished his arts degree and began using computers at a young age. He contacted iPM after hearing Professor Greenfield. This is the unedited version of his interview with Eddie Mair, an cut of it will feature on Saturday's programme.

Team GB or Team UK?

We're looking into why the team of athletes in Beijing representing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is called Team GB

Castizo left a comment on the blog, while David Woodgates emailed: "Just who exactly coined the phrase 'Team GB', which you continue to employ incorrectly in your broadcasting? Was it our revered government, or was it the tabloid media who thought it up and printed the T-shirts before you could put them right? Our Olympic squad includes atheletes from Northern Ireland, which is a member of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but not of Great Britain. I hope they can get things right by 2012"

A number of blogs have picked this issue up.

Archbishop Cranmer says that Team GB is an "affront to the loyal British people of Northern Ireland, of which there are very many indeed". You can read the blog entry in full here.

One of the highest profile blogs on matters relating to Northern Ireland, Slugger O'Toole also weighs in with an entry entitled "What does Team GB, not UK, say to you?".

And you can read a thoughtful post about national identity, touching on the Team GB v Team UK debate, on Britologywatch.

A diary update

Many thanks to those of you who sent in your diary entry for August 9th. You can read people's submissions here

On Saturday's iPM, we hope to be speaking to someone who knows all about diaries kept by members of the public - Dorothy Sheridan who is Director of the Mass Observation Archive which records "everyday life in Britain".

Mass Observation began in the 1930s, continued into the 1950s and was revived in 1981. It asks hundreds of volunteers every few months to send in their views or experiences on a range of issues, with their responses chronicled by the MOA.

If you enjoyed sharing your diary entry with the iPM community, and you want to do something similar in the future, then we hope to have news of how you can do that very soon. .

UPDATE: Are you male and aged 16-44? The Mass Observation Archive are recruiting...

Draft running order for Saturday August 12th

So this is how we're looking as of Tuesday afternoon:

It's shaping up to be a great programme, but would you like to help make it even better?

NMW is a story Chris has been looking into, relating to the National Minimum Wage. Only some people aren't even getting that. If this resonates with you, then add a comment below.

GREENFIELD isn't anything to do with undeveloped land, but is instead Baroness Susan Greenfield.

Mr BLOG is...Chris Vallance. As he is most weeks, to be honest.

We're not quite sure what ITEM is just yet. It could be a two minute hole in the programme, it could be some listener-led suggestion.

My colleague Jennifer has been working away on the BLUEJACK story she posted about a few days ago. She's got a number of strong stories so far, but she's in the market for more.

And if you've been listening to iPM or PM over the last few days, you'll have a pretty good idea what DIARY is. The question we're currently trying to resolve is how it will sound on air...

Each week on iPM we peer metaphorically over the shoulder of someone famous, to find out which websites and blogs they really can't live without.

We've had such luminaries as the illusionist Derren Brown, the hollywood actress Mia Farrow and the writer and comedian Armando Ianucci.

This week, it's comedy legend John Cleese:

Add IPM Radio4's channel to your page

His favourites were:
CNN's American politics site

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust

Head Cast

Dirt Bike Bitz

And our thanks to podcaster Dean Whitbread for helping get John Cleese "into the can".

So how are you feeling?

Every so often, we get alerted to a great website*, one which deserves a wider audience. It is one of the selling points of iPM: let us know, and we'll let the rest of the world know.

One such website is We Feel Fine.

It starts from the simple premise that the phrase "I feel..." or "I'm feeling..." is extremely common in blogs and websites, which are often very personal creations.

By searching for those two phrases on websites like MySpace, Flickr, Technorati, Ice Rocket, and Google, this website builds up a picture of how people are feeling, all over the world.

It's searchable, so if you feel like finding out how 40-49 year old women in Sydney are feeling right now, it can do that.

(I'm looking forward to finding out how people in Weston-super-mare are feeling today...)

Click on the image below, and you'll be taken to their website.

But only if you feel like it.

(be aware that the website is data-heavy so it may take some time to load up...and the BBC is not responsible for any content contained on it)

*Like buses, you wait ages to be told about great websites, and then two come along at once.

Flowing Data is a website devoted to making information more "visual". Click on the above, which shows the growth of Walmart across America....and then "feel free" to explore further.

Show notes: More data discussions, Savvy Chavvy and Olive Riley

And so that's iPM finished with for another week*

We updated you on

We followed the journey our story from last week took - taking in comments from the Information Commissioner Richard Thomas, Lord Erroll and David Davis.

Savvy Chavvy
No, we're not talking about PM reporter Yvonne Murray who took up the Mr Blog reigns this week, but a social networking site for young travellers and gypsies.

She also mentioned the Government's public information mashup competition, worth a scroll down the ideas page even if you've only got a minute.

Farewell to the world's oldest blogger
We paid tribute to the charming Olive Riley as she signed off aged 108.

* Not strictly true - we always welcome your comments on the programme which has just gone out and your suggestions for what we should do next week or in future weeks.

Nonagenarians and centenarians who blog?

An update on Jen's post earlier this week about the search for Britain's oldest blogger

Both Age Concern and Help the Aged are checking their databases to see if they can point us to the oldest person in Britain who blogs. Let us know if you know of a blogger in their 90s or even 100s

We're doing this following the recent death at 108 years old of Olive Riley. Her blog is now back online, and if we can hook up between London and Australia, we'll be hearing on iPM from the creative force behind Olive's "Life of Riley" blog, Mike Rubbo. He even made a documentary about her and her extraordinary life.

Although the search for Britain's oldest blogger continues, we have come across this blog, which belongs to a 96 year old Spanish woman. If your understanding of Galician isn't quite up to scratch, there's an English version here.

Friday afternoon update:

The technology worked, and I have interviewed Mike Rubbo about Olive and her blog. It'll be featured on this week's iPM, and you can listen to a longer version of Mike's memories of Olive below:

Become part of Radio 4's audience community

A few years ago, iPM's sister programme PM launched a panel of listeners.

After weeks of deliberation, heated discussions and many meetings, it was given the name of "The PM Panel".

It's been moribund for a little while - but it's now being revived, in a new format.

When the Panel was first conceived, it sought listeners' views and opinions. Now we're looking to tap into the Radio 4 audience's experience and knowledge.
You would help us cover the news better, by sharing your expertise on various subjects.

Help solving cancer - online

The comedian Jimmy Carr is known for his one-liners, and among his quips is this:

"A lady with a clipboard stopped me in the street the other day. She said, 'Can you spare a few minutes for cancer research?' I said, 'All right, but we won't get much done."

It now looks though as if comedy is moving into the realm of reality: if you have a few minutes to play a game on-line, then who knows: you could help cure cancer, HIV or Alzheimers.

Foldit is asking internet users to "solve puzzles for science".

It's a free game, designed by scientists at the University of Washington, in which players around the world compete to design proteins. You can get a more detailed explanation of proteins here.

Understanding the rules of "protein folding" remains one of biology's central problems. Solving that problem could lead to real benefits: scientists will test proteins designed by the game's players to see if they make viable candidate compounds for new drugs.

You can read what others have said about Foldit here, here and here.

In order to play Fold It, you need to sign up for the game and please do let us know if you happen to help cure cancer or indeed any disease as we'd probably want to feature you on a forthcoming iPM.

And finally...

We've just had Thursday's iPM production meeting, and we agreed that this week's show looks quite "serious".

As you can see from the running order , the subjects don't lend themselves to levity:

Net Neutrality - whether broadband internet service providers are having an undue say about which sites and applications you can access.

Home Heating Oil - why has the cost of heating oil for domestic users risen by 75% in a year?

Everest - Tales from climbers who're being silenced as the controversial Olympic Torch relay nears the mountain.

So - we're turning to you.

We want your suggestions for something a little lighter. Have you come across any quirky blogs or websites that deserve a wider audience? Let us know in the comments section below and it could well feature on a forthcoming iPM.

Draft running order for Saturday May 3rd

Here's how the programme is shaping up as of Thursday morning.

Don't forget that you can shape what we do if you share what you know about the stories we're looking at.

Comments are always welcome below or you can email us

Can you help "crack" this egg story?*

There are few certainties in life: birth, death, taxes and egg yolks being yellow.

Only they aren't always.

Philip Robinson emailed iPM (you can as well by clicking here ), alerting us to something intriguing he'd found on this blog.

John Conners' blog entry relates how he was tucking into a poached egg and saw that the egg yolk was WHITE. And he's not alone. Comments on his blog have come from across the UK and even America, all from people who have also found white egg yolks. But no-one seems to know why or how it happens. In fact, if you turn to Google (other search engines are available) and search "white egg yolk", the only relevant entry...is John Conners' blog!

So iPM is stepping in to help. We've contacted those in the know, and we'll try to have the answer for Saturday.

But we're also turning this over to you. If you have any thoughts about how an egg yolk ends up white, or if you've ever found one yourself, share what you know in the comments section below.

UPDATE FROM JEN: So here we are, all is revealed...sort of. We spoke to Andrew Joret, chairman of the Technical Committee of the British Egg Industry Council. He's never seen a white egg yolk in all his years as chairman and, just for iPM, he explains why that is -

*The options for some poor egg-related pun were many, and the above was the best I could come up with. Alternative suggestions are also welcome in the comments section...

Suggest a story for April 26th

We're now busy working towards this Saturday's programme - but we're always open to your ideas for what we should be covering.

Bubbling away at the moment:

+ Is housing benefit keeping pace with rising rents?;

+ The influence of micro-blogging applications like Twitter;

+ Man and machine - but which is which?

You can add your suggestions in the comments section below, or you can email us.

We read all the emails we receive and you don't have to have a fully-formed idea, just a suggestion for something you think we ought to look at is enough!
