#AskGreg: Your questions answered!

Hey everyone. Thanks so much for all the awesome tweets, Facebook messages and blog comments you've been posting about The Secrets Of Everything. It was lots of fun making a series that tried to answer those brain-tickling FAQs we've always wondered about, and I had an absolutely blast filming it – even getting buried alive and being shot in the butt with an air rifle! It's ace that you guys have been enjoying it. Cheers for the #AskGreg questions you've sent in too – there were some absolute crackers, so I've picked out a couple to have a go at answering...

cusker87 asked... Is it possible to travel back/forth through time? And if it is possible, how far can we actually travel?

Oh man, that's a big one. And a major head screw!

Ok, here goes: The reason some people think time travel could be possible is down to Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Over 100 years ago Einstein was sat pondering one of his famous thought experiments when he hit on the idea that you shouldn't see space and time as separate things, but actually as an interlinked 4-dimensional thing called "space-time".

Basically you need to take your 3 dimensions of space (left/right, up/down, forwards/backwards) and add in another for time… Kinda tricky to imagine! Then, what you need is a wormhole – kind of like a tunnel through that 4d space-time - that would theoretically allow someone to move from one time and place to another time and place in the blink of an eye…

So, yes, time travel *is* theoretically possible. Whether it's actually do-able is another matter! Physicists reckon travelling *forwards* in time is all good. After all, Einstein's Theory of Relativity says that if you travel around the universe at close to the speed of light, when you come back to Earth you will have aged less than those who stayed on our planet. So technically you'll have travelled into the future where they're older than you.

What physicists aren't so keen on is travelling *backwards* in time. That's because of the time-travel paradox – what's to stop someone going back in time and killing their grandfather before their father is conceived?? There is a work-around that involves multiple universes but then it gets even more complicated. I think.

So, that's briefly the theory. But in practise? Who knows. One thing though, if time travel is possible, why haven't we met someone from the future yet? Or maybe we have…

Charlie asked... Is there a sound frequency that can make you loose control of your bowels?

Ah ha, the famous "brown noise"! I love this idea.

Think of someone trying to smash a wine glass with their dulcet tones. Sound travels in a wave and is just a series of compressions and decompressions. When that sound wave hits the glass it sets it compressing and decompressing too. If the frequency of the singing matches the glass’s particular "resonant frequency" those compressions and decompressions get amplified big time. Hit a glass with a sound of that particular frequency at a high enough intensity and you can smash it.

The same principal works with your bowels! In Episode 3 we had a look at whether sound could kill you. Using a whole bunch of huge festival speakers I showed that high intensity, low frequency sound could set your organs vibrating and rippling. That’s because that particular note – I think we were down in the 128Hz rang – is very close to the resonant frequency of those organs. So if you can get a note at the resonant frequency of your bowels you could, in theory, set them vibrating a LOT, and that could mean you lose control of them…

// ]]>

However, in practise, the music you get at gigs and festivals isn't actually loud enough to cause you an underpants issue. Plus it’s constantly changing frequencies so you don’t get that sustained impact that could lead to a messy situation…

Have you got a question that's always bugged you? Ever wanted to settle once and for all that classic argument about whether you should put your milk in first or last when making a cuppa? Or maybe discover why we can't tickle ourselves? Or see if science has got any secrets to rid you of your stinking hangover?

Well, this is your chance to find out the truth! Just scribble your mind-twister down and...

Post it in the comments below or

I'll pick a bunch out and jot down the answers in the next blog post.

In the first episode I go under the knife to find out what humans taste like, head to Reading Festival to see if everyone on the planet jumped at the same time would it move the Earth, and hurt myself doing stupid things with electricity to find out how to survive a lightning strike.
The Secrets Of Everything

Last time I was on the Three Blog I'd just been off surfing a tidal wave, playing the guitar at 60mph, and microwaving some ants (which I've been told to remind you guys, don't try at home!) But it was all to explain how the universe began and where we came from in the BBC Three science documentary Secrets of the Universe.

Thanks to your feedback on the show, a full series has been commissioned (I owe you lovely people a drink). So over the past six months I've been buried alive, shot, burnt, punched, zapped, frozen, and generally suffered in the name of science filming the new series, The Secrets of Everything. You said you liked the stunt approach to explaining science, so the Producers didn't hold back! And I was only seriously damaged once...

The Secrets of Everything is all about getting to the bottom of those brain-tickling questions you've always wondered about but never found a definitive answer to. Stuff like "What do humans taste like?" and "Does water really drain through a plughole the other way down under" or "Why do chillies burn even though they're cold?"

The producers decided that the best way to get to the bottom of the last question would be to have a chilli-off!

Now, I've got to admit, I am RUBBISH with spice, but I'm always game for a challenge. I manned-up and gave my mate Jonny a call – he makes mind-blowingly hot food so I knew he'd be the right guy for the job.

Down the pub, we faced off with some crazy hot chillies as we worked our way up the 'Scoville Scale' – a measure of how hot a chilli is. Chillies don't actually burn, it's just that the capsaicin in the chilli makes the receptors in your mouth think there's something really hot in there. Oh, and capsaicin affects receptors everywhere... so you normally feel the heat again the next day too. These were some of the hottest chillies you can get your hands on. Yowch! Anyway, enjoy!

Keep your eyes peeled on the blog for more info about when the series kicks off. There's six stunt-filled episodes, each one jam-packed with intriguing questions and messy, dangerous, explosive answers.

In the next blog post we'll also be opening the doors to you guys, asking if you've got any frequently asked questions, urban legends, or mind-twisters that have you puzzled. We'll pick out a bunch and uncover the truth!

Exclusive Explosion: blowing up a paddling pool with hydrogen

Hey guys, I'm new to BBC Three so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Greg and for the past five months I've been off doing lots of cool stuff for a new BBC Three show called Secrets of the Universe. It's a science documentary, but it's kinda different to the typical science shows. First up they didn't send me anywhere glamorous like the jungle or the arctic - which was a bit gutting - but I did get to surf a tidal wave (over near Gloucester!) and play the guitar at 60mph strapped to a jeep. Hell yeah!

I even got Big Ben to chime thirteen times:

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. The show sets out to answer one of those epic head-screw questions - where did we come from? And when I was told we'd be doing loads of stunts to find out what's going on I jumped at the chance. Literally. One of the demos involves my mates shooting me with some pretty fly paintball guns as I dropped out of a tree. Yep, it bloody hurt. Major purple bruises for weeks. Good laugh though, and it was all to check out the gravity that stops us floating off into space.

There's loads of other stuff like me microwaving ants, building a death ray and exploding a massive cream cake (that was an awesome day!) too so the show is pretty rammed. One thing that we couldn't squeeze in was some fun I had up on my roof terrace, so I thought I'd give you the chance to watch the extra scene here. My housemates don't know about this though, which is probably a good plan, as they're still wondering what happened to their beloved plants...

See what happened in this exclusive clip of a paddling pool explosion!

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. This clip was a supersized version of a little demo I did in the show where I used a battery to rip water molecules apart and release the hydrogen inside. The test for hydrogen is to light it. If you get a pop, voila it's hydrogen. So I thought why don't I do a big one up on my roof? We got some car batteries and a paddling pool and set it going. Got a pretty sweet amount of hydrogen but when I lit it there was only a tiny flame and not the explosion I was looking for. So we called in a canister of hydrogen, just to get that proper bang!

The cool thing with this is that all the stuff exploding here - hydrogen - was made in the Big Bang, so it's over 13 billion years old. Which is kinda crazy cos when you drink a glass of water you're drinking down something from the dawn of time. Which I think is pretty neat.

It's been a blast making the show and fingers crossed I'll get to do another! I'd love to hear what you guys think of the show.
