BBC iPlayer: find programmes from other on demand services

Today we are launching a new feature in BBC iPlayer that helps you find programmes from other broadcasters and on demand content providers.

Through metadata-sharing partnerships, you can now find programmes from ITV, Channel 4, S4C, Five, SeeSaw.com and new partner MSN Video Player, directly from the BBC iPlayer website.

Either by using the 'schedule widget' (see left), or the 'search' function (see below), you will be able to find other video on demand content, and link directly into the playback page of your chosen programme from one of our partners websites.

To do this, feeds are taken from our partners periodically that contain all their programme information, both scheduled and on demand to make the programmes findable through the BBC iPlayer interface.

Image left shows a Five schedule displayed via BBC iPlayer 'schedule widget

Image below shows Channel 4' "Shameless" displayed via BBC iPlayer search function

When the content isn't available the programme title is greyed out and the words (not available) appear beneath the program information:

It's been a while in the making, but this has been an extremely ambitious and technically complicated project. We wanted to get to a user-experience that feels intuitive and not "bolted on", even though the experience is as much reliant on the data feeds from our partners as our own engineering.

We've worked hard with our partners to make sure that we're getting the right data and images for programmes when available, however you may find from time to time there's no images (see image below). We've also updated our FAQ section to include Partner Linking, click here for more information.

The occasional lack of images is down to technical limitations and we're working with all partners to rectify this as soon as we can. We really pleased to have six partners for launch but inclusion into this programme is not limited. Any provider of UK on demand content that holds rights to video that has previously been broadcast on an OFCOM regulated channel can apply to become a BBC iPlayer partner and have their content added, so we hope to see more partners programmes appear in BBC iPlayer over time.

More broadly, we think BBC Online should serve as a hub to support other UK sites and want to double the traffic we send externally. Already the BBC News product is one of the top 5 sites driving referrals to UK newspapers, adding value to the UK online economy and our audiences: this partnership is a good example of how the BBC iPlayer can follow in those footsteps.

Given the popularity of BBC iPlayer, we hope this feature will support fellow broadcasters and boost the overall uptake of video on demand.

Most importantly, by helping audiences uncover great digital services that exist elsewhere on the web, we believe we're performing an important public service.

As always I'd welcome your feedback.

N.B. Clarification 3.50 p.m.: Channel 4 are currently not in the new BBC iPlayer schedule widget but will be soon (due to technical issues which are being addressed). However C4 are an On Demand Partner, and C4 programmes can be searched for in iPlayer. For example, here are search results for Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, and Hollyoaks.

LSO ("Flash Cookies") and Media Player: Update

In James Hewines' earlier post about Flash LSOs and the BBC's Media Player it was suggested that the work to remove the LSO dependency would be completed in several months time. I thought it would be useful to provide some more detail around progress towards this.

Since the last post we have been working hard to move our code base from the legacy programming language (AS2) to the new one (AS3). In doing so we've examined all of the EMP codebase and realised that we underestimated the original scale of work we had to complete. We still have the following modules of code left to port across:

CDN Redundancy (switch across, failover etc)

Robust connection routine covering multiple port and protocol combinations - rtmp, rtmpe, rtmpt, rtmpte (tunnelling for firewalls)

Javascript API work

CDN services for all supported CDNs for basic streaming

AS3 Dynamic resizing for Console

Streaming for EMP Audio

iStats reporting for AS3

Dynamic streaming for FP 10

Dynamic streaming for FP 10.1

CDN switching & fail-over completed

Security - token auth and swf verification

From having completed much of the EMP work we are now more confident about our timescales. Our best estimate is that we will have a fully transitioned and LSO free EMP by Spring 2011. As well a removing the LSO dependency the EMP will also have a new look and feel, moving to the latest BBC wide GEL (global experience language) style. I hope this provides more clarity on where we are with our transition work and the impact it has on removing our LSO dependency.

BBC iPlayer Desktop 3.0.8

Version 3.0.8 of BBC iPlayer Desktop is now available for beta testing. This
release attempts to solve one issue related to user reports that programmes
are unexpectedly expiring during the 30 day availability window.

As it takes a minimum of 7 days before the problem appears it has been hard to
identify the root cause, and verify that we have fixed the issue as expected.
Ideally we would continue to test the application for a full 30 days before
release but we hope that some users will be happy to test this as a beta and
provide feedback.

Not all users will have been affected by this specific problem. We think that
some machines running the latest versions of Adobe AIR (2.x) experienced the
issue. This is because of undocumentated changes to the Flash player.

A manual install will be needed, please download the new release from:

http://bbc.in/ipd308

As long as you have the Adobe AIR runtime, installation is as simple as quitting
iPlayer Desktop completely then opening the downloaded file and following the
on screen instructions.

If you experience iPlayer Desktop issues that persist, please send your log
files to iplayer DOT beta DOT diagnostic AT bbc.co.uk (search your computer
for a file called iPlayer.log).

Many thanks,
