Refugee Boy

Refugee Boy was originally written as a novel by Benjamin Zephaniah and published in 2001. Refugee Boy tells the story of boy called Alem.

Refugee Boy tells the story of the Kelo family: Alem and his parents Mr and Mrs Kelo. There are various secondary characters including: court officials, soldiers and Tewdros.

Many of the themes explored in Refugee Boy are relevant to both Lemn Sissay and Benjamin Zephaniah's own lives. Some of the key themes are: youth, belonging and identity.

Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah is set in modern-day England, with flashback scenes set in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Refugee Boy is examined in Paper 1, Section B (Post 1914 Prose/ Drama) of your GCSE English Literature exam. it is a closed book exam.
